A few guys have shown interest in starting a bow trade on PA. First thing is that Primitive Archer Magazine or website will not be responcible for this trade or have anything to do with it. We will be able to use the site for it though. If any problems arrise we will handle them ourselves.
Rich, (half eye) asked me if I will organize it. For now, I don't have the time or energy to take control of this. I will participate and will help with the rules of the trade but someone else will have to handle the list of builders and recievers and be sure the rules are followed. I will help as I can.
I'm in on my second bow trade on TradGang and we learned a few dos and don'ts last year. As far as I am concerned this is not about what bow you may recieve but the bow you will be making and giving to another participant. If you are a newbie and don't feel you can compete with the seasoned bowyers that might get involved think again. If you are willing to put all you have into a wood bow then you qualify to join in. If you don't like the idea of making the best bow you can but you might be getting something that a newbie might be making and you don't think it is a fair trade, you should probably stay out of this trade. It isn't about fair trades or newbie vs seasoned bowyer but it is about the spirit of giving and sharing that makes these trades work...just like in the Christmas trade.
So with all that said, who is willing to take the reins to guide this trade to a successful end? We will discuss it all among ourselves and get everything worked out before we jump in and really get started. So, lets hear your ideas, suggestions, worries or whatever and get this show on the roads. 8)
when you PM Elktracker your shipping address PLEASE do it like this so he doesnt have to go look and find your number and write your name, he can just copy and paste. If you havent been assigned a number on the updated list just leave the number out.

I'm interested. I'm a newbie but I think this would be a good excuse for me to put everything Ive read and learned on here and elsewhere and put something together.
-
I'm for it also....I hope somebody with experience is willin to take it on.
rich
-
I would probably be considered a newbie to some but I would love to get in on this!
Mark
-
I am in. I would also be glad to help any organizer.
Would it be inappropriate to specify left or right hand and standard draw? I would hate to tiller a bow to my draw then have it go to someone that has a lot longer drawlength.
Bevan
-
Bevan,
Maybe when someone enters their name they could specify their draw length, weight range, which handed they are and maybe wether they like a rest or not. It could be listed by their name on the list?

That was my thought but was not sure.
Bevan Richards - Right, 27" draw, 50# or less.
Something like that?

HI, I'm not a bowyer. I flintknapp, and I have met some very nice and helpful people here on PA. I'm in the process of learning to make arrows. the concept of a trade that brings a group of people together I THINK IS REALLY GREAT. If I could make a bow, I would love to get in on this. As a matter of fact David Knight is making a bow for me. I'm sure that all will put their hearts into what they make, Its a fun thing (so enjoy it) Gordon
-
What kind of time frame would we be looking at? I would like to get in, but it takes me a while to make a bow.
-
I have a suggestion about the time frame...
How about posting date of Memorial Weekend? That gives us a little over 3 months from now.
(I figure that gives me 2 months of bow blowing up and a month of bribing JW to make it. ;D)
Any thoughts?
Bevan
-
Memorial Weekend sounds good to me
Right handed
28-30" draw (30 inch is full draw but I can anchor at 28 with no problems)
40-50#
of the knuckle, floppy, or rest, doesn't matter.
Actually all in all the specs don't matter to me, I just think it would just be great to share bows and what we all love to do.
(I figure that gives me 2 months of bow blowing up and a month of bribing JW to make it. ;D)

That's funny!

I'm really loving all these trades, it really pushes me to improve. I'd be very interested in joining in. I don't have any seasoned staves at the moment, so if I'm unable to trade for one I'd probably have to build a RO board bow if that's ok with everybody.

As of yet I have not seen anyone saying it had to be a stave bow. In my opinion, any bow someone is willing to put the time and effort into is OK (baring any of that nasty FG stuff, right JW? >:D)

Did you see Josh's latest Bow? It was a RO board and a lovely bow. As long as like Pat said, you put your heart into making the best bow you can with the materials you have your recipient will be pleased.

If it looks anything like the RO board bow you just made, I don't know of anybody that would turn their nose up to that.
I was already thinking of going that route, then if I got one done SUCCESSFULLY (key word), in time, cutting/splitting that osage and trying that out.

I think Pat says it all right there!!

Ya'll please don't get me wrong, I'm not looking down on them at all. Matter of fact, I've grown quite fond of them. I know there's not near the amount of work involved in one compared to a snakey osage stave, though. No matter what I built it would be to the best of my ability.

Anything that is legit on PA is legit in the trade. It is a good idea for all to give their specific info but we will start another thread for that. This thread is to see who's in and to put our heads together to figure out what's good and what's not. Memorial day should be enough time for me too. If we need to go longer we can but not less.
The way we did it on TradGang was everyone put down their draw length and draw weight, left or right handed, shelf or off the hand, glass or wood(not an option here but we could do self or backed) or we could do it just bow for bow, whatever I make for whatever you make. These are all just suggestions so everyone should speak up if you have something to add or subtract.
One person needs to collect all the names, number each as they come in and numbers will be drawn from a hat and assigned to the person at the top of the list as the names came in and on down.
Another thing we ran into last year was folks running into difficulties with life or whatever and not being able to finish a bow. One guy I know broke 3 in a row before getting one to send out. He was late getting it done but he came through none the less. One other guy recieved a bow but vanished off the face of the earth without building and sending out his bow. Things like this happen. It turned out that another guy,
that was not even in the trade offered to build a bow for the guy that lost out. I think this bow was recently posted here on PA. If you think for some reason that you are not going to be able to conplete your bow, please contact whomever is running the trade and other arrangements can take place. At least you can send the bow you recieved to whomever you were supposed to send the trade bow to.
One other thing, lets keep it a secret as to whom you drew. We can and should post pics as we go along, describing our bows and any interesting things that come up but please keep it quiet as to who we are building for and keep the tell tale specifics out of it until the end. When you are ready to send your bow out to the reciepient you can send him(or her) an e-mail or PM letting them know to be on the lookout for a package. I'd hate to see someones bow laying unseen in a bush because of whatever reason.
It is a lot better to get all of this out in the open before we get started. There will probably still be some other issues but we will try to take care of them as they arise.
-
Just for my 2 cents worth, this is a chance to get more out of the site by makin some new friends.......I be happy as a pig in a puddle to get ANY bow from ANY member.....period.
right handed, 27", off the hand, 45-55 # by the way
rich
-
Memorial Day is fine. Gives me a chance to break one or two before then. ;)
-
I really like the idea of keep who you are build for secret. Like Calendargirl did the Christmas Gift Exchange. It made if fun to know who you were doing something for but not who was doing something for you.
If it is just a matter of keeping track of names coming in and then drawing to match, I would be willing to take that on.
Bevan

This is a great idea and I'd be interested. Mine would be a board bow, but I'll put my best effort into it!
I have a really stupid question though, I've never shipped a bow before, anything in particular to look out for?
28" draw (but I can short or long draw, so 25=32" if it makes it fit the bow's design better)
right handed (arrow rest optional, no preference one way or another)
30-60# (surprise me!)
-
Looks like I won't be the only "new kid" jumping in so that makes me feel a bit more comfortable...I'd be happy to have my name on the list also please.
27"-28" draw, 45-50#
Regards,
-
I agree with Rich. It's about makin some new friends as much as it is gettin a new bow. Not a stupid question Matt, I was getting ready to ask the same one. What's the best way to ship a bow? Anyway, I'm in ;D ;D ;D!
27-28" draw, I shoot left and right...so no shelf or maybe two.
40-70#...I'd be happy with anything really!

Great Idea!! I'm in. ;D
Right handed, 26"-28", off the hand, 50#

Would this be open to someone from out of country? I'm not sure what it would cost or if there's any restrictions in shipping a bow from Canada to the U.S., or vice-versa.
-

Only 'restriction' I would think of is the customs declaration and the shipping cost. As far as being open to 'out of the country' I think the Christmas Exchange asked if there was a hardship for paying for shipping into or out of the US.
Please correct me if I am wrong about this.

Out of the U.S. is fine unless your Canadian >:D :P ;D

Hey NTD, I have to say that any country that comes up with a show line 'Naked News' has to be a winner!! >:D ;D

i never understood customs for sending to or from/going to or from canada
isnt that just our 51st state after all ;D

well i missed out on the x-mas trade(lifes been hecktic last year)
now everything is settled up
ive been in on the PITH,now im in the KITH
so what the heck i might as well be in on the BITH too ;D
count me in, i need a reason/excuse to make another bow :D
-

Out of the U.S. is fine unless your Canadian >:D :P ;D
Oh, I'm sorry Nate. You must be under the impression that your opinion matters! :P >:D
I just checked the Canada post website, and to send a bow-sized package to AZ for example (not that I would send you a bow Nate, even if I drew your name! :-* ), was around $50. I can handle that, as long as the recipient of my name feels the same. If that's cool, I'm in!
I don't think we should specify backed or unbacked - I think we should just build what we like to build.
I have a 28" Draw, would prefer 50-60lbs., lefty, but don't need a shelf (but don't really care either way)
-
Glad my irony was able to translate over the web, that's not always easy ;)
I'd be willing to ship out of the country. That may be tough for some though so I suppose when submitting our draw length/weights etc we should specify whether we would be willing too. They did that for the TG swap.
-
Im in ;D got some nice ocean spray staves ready to go, ill be looking out for the next thread for specific info or if you wouldnt mind let us know when you start that thread since im subscribed to this one. Sounds fun ;D
-
I just shipped 2 staves to Canada. They cost $13 and $15 to send. They weren't boxed up, just wrapped in brown tape.
Shipping a bow isn't that hard. Just get two of the long tubes from the post office and tape them together in the middle. Wrap the bow in bubble wrap and stick it in the tube.
-
After all the work that goes into a bow I'd be nervous to send it in anything other than a PVC pipe.
-
Ill start the list of names and and number them 1 from the first person and so on who do I submit the names to and when is the cut off for people to enter?
-
well im a newbee too for that matter but i would like to join up with this great idea !! i think i can get one ready by the deadline....just maybe
-
im in , 40-60# lefy, or shoot off the hand. 26-27'' draw
-
well im a newbee too for that matter but i would like to join up with this great idea !! i think i can get one ready by the deadline....just maybe
Right Ken... you've probably got so many that you're using them for firewood!
-
not yet . although i did count 37 in the house the other day and a few in the shop for instant playing !!
-
Shipping to Canada is easy, just don't mention feathers or leather ;) If you ship to Europe they have shorter length restrictions than the US and Canada. You might have to cut the bow in half.
-
So this is what I have so far, I think pat said we would save the specifics of our draw length, weight ect. for another thread correct me if im wrong pat

ElkTracker - I have a 28" Draw, would prefer a hunting weight bow (50-60lbs.), lefty, don't need a shelf, but doesn't matter either way.
-
I'll get in on the trade, i was in the one and on TG last year it went pretty good. I'm also in the one this year.
Who do we send are mailing info too ? When is the cut off for getting in ? are a couple of question i have.
I'll be happy with whatever i get as long as my builder put his best effort into it, thats all you can do.
I shoot RH 26'' on up in draw length and anything 30# and up on draw is cool !

For cheap and very durable shipping containers, consider dropping by your local carpet store. They throw out some of the best heavyduty bow shipping tubes ya ever saw.
I really don't know if I can get one done by Memorial Day with the schedule I have, but if it comes to it, I will ship my own bow if I gotta. Yeah, I guess I am in. (Bevan, yer on your own, sucka!)
26" draw, right handed, 50-60#, no yew please (climate is too dry and a broken yew bow would break my heart).
-
As long as there is an honest effort, 26 or 36" doesnt matter to me. I know I may have trouble getting exact draw weight and draw length, so I'd be a hypocrite for asking for a specific weight and length. I am a righty though and have 0 other preferences.
-
Could always move the finish date up too, 4th of July maybe ???

I'm in!

josh, glad to see your on top of this stuff ;D
but you still show me as a lefty,i can shoot all my guns left handed
but have yet to figure out shooting a bow left handed

-
I guess I'm not officially in unless I give my info.
45# to 55#(to 60#) @26" , right handed. Prefer off the hand or a floppy rest but I'm not picky! I can ship only within the US.
We need everyones mailing address so, if Josh doesn't mind, instead of posting it here for all to see you might want to send that info to Josh in a PM. Josh, you need something to doo while the kids are resting! ;D
-
Ok so I will also be collecting mailing addresses and makeing a list of those for each of you as well and giving that info to whoever will be in charge of drawing from the hat. So give me your preffered draw length and pound of bow and if you are left or right handed. If you have already givin me this info then the only other thing I will need Is you to PM me your address you would like your bow shipped to. On the list I posted I will also post by your name what I still need from you if I dont recieve it in a couple days.
We also need a deadline for entering and maybe we should take a vote to see when we need to have these bows done, some say memorial weekend and some say the fourth of july. I guess we should all post which of these dates we want to go with? Anybody else have any thoughts? Is it possible to start a poll to see wich day would be most favored? Thanks for any help and input im just winging it here, maybe pat b will chime in soon and have some more ideas. Thanks

-
I really like the July 4th finish date idea. I want to get in, but I don't want to be rushing last minute and send bow that isn't what it should be.
-
I also agree that if we go to july 4th we can put out a great bow and maybe get more people involved who are worried about not getting it done in time. I just dont want to have to write down all this info for that long lol So you in osage outlaw? if so I think your like number 3 on the list, post up your info and we will see what others have to say about 4th of july. I like it ;D
-
Whoa! Hope I'm not too late to throw my hat in.
45#-60# @ 28"-29" (29" preferred), off hand or right-handed rest.

Whoa! Hope I'm not too late to throw my hat in.
45#-60# @ 28"-29" (29" preferred), off hand or right-handed rest.
your added and also got your address added to my other list thanks
Josh
-
I would like to get in too, right handed 40-60lbs @ 27'' would prefer US only shipping, arrow rest doesn't matter.
-
Ok, I'm in.
Right handed
55-60# @ 26"
Prefer a shelf or some kind of a rest
-
Not on the computer since yesterday AM and look what ya got started Rich ;D Of course I'm in. Just hope I can do my recipeant justice
45-50 @ 26 right hand. Selfbow of the hand or floppy. Otherwise a shelf
-
This is going to be fun. I would say let the sign up go until the end of this month and have the bows shipped by July 4th.
Josh on my draw length i'd like anything 26" and up, Thanks ! pm coming with my mailing address !
-
Did not see my name on the list hope I'm in 4th of July sounds good for a deadline will PM for address again I'm lefty 55# or greater @ 26" draw Thanks -Hammertime
-
4th of July sounds good to me. Should allow plenty of time to get used to it before deer season should you want to hunt with it. As for my stats, lefty, 28", 50# and up (if somebody just has a hankering to build a really big bow I'll be the guinnea pig), and no preference on shelf or not. Hot dang this is going to be fun.
-
Elk, 26-36 was in jest, meaning I'd be happy with whatever I receive.....but in reality, 29" 45-55#, as for the rest, I'd love to see whatever the builder has in store for me.
-
When is the deadline for sigh up? I need to finish up a few projects before I can take on another bow. I don't want to sign up and not finish in time.
Pat- The one guy that got shafted in the bow swap on TradGang was BaldingKansan ( Tlyer Holden ) I was in that swap, you just didn't notice me. ;) Ten different people spoke up and offered to make Tyler a bow, I just got luckey and he picked me. I'm pretty sure he doesn't post here. The bow you are thinking of I think is my last one. I posted it in both forums. This is Balding's swap bow.

Oh what the hell... Put me in! I'll make it.
Right handed, shelf or no shelf doesn't matter to me. I'll shoot anything but 40-80 is best. I'll most likely make a selfbow from one wood or another.
-
DVSHUNTER,
Glad to see you over here. I play over at TG but PA is home for me ;D
-
How about the end of this month (February) as cutoff for signing up? This give time for the word to get out.
Then stretch the finish date to the 4th of July. (Gives me time to work on JW >:D).
Another question is, shipping early OK? or do we want to kind of time it so everyone gets theirs about the same time?

This looks like fun. I'd like to participate. As for me, right handed, either way on a shelf, 28" 55# give or take. Great idea to start this one up. ;D

Josh, most seem to want the end of the month for the end of sign up...so Monday, February 28, 6:00pm will be the deadline to sign up for the bow trade. No one accepted aftervthat time! Once all the names are in and all the info is correct the builder/reciepient will be pared up. Marie said she will do the honors of drawing the names.
Josh if you drew the names and matched them to the numbers you would know who chose you and who you chose. If Marie picks the names and mates them to the numbers none of the participants know who it building what for whom. ;D

This is just a thought: but maybe we could get an arrow exchange going as well ? That way this fall we can all hunt with bows and arrows that were made for us, might have more meaning and add some fun to this coming hunting season.

Pat will be posting the ship by date when he gets a chance but as of now I believe the end date or ship by date will be July 4th. A number of people have signed up under the impression this would end on that date and I would rather people not have to rush depending on there time frames. What are your guys thoughts on the 4 of july? I would like to hear some others opinions on this date. Thanks
Josh
-
I say leave it at July 4th. If the maker get everything done and ships early, fine, but there are many that signed up with the thought of the 4th.

5 months to make a bow
im slow but even i dont need that much time ;)
as far as arrows going with the bow

i hate making arrows, even for my self
i only make them as i need them

as far as arrows going with the bow

thats why i think it should be optional
-
one other question, does the 4th of july date mean that is when it has to by shipped on, be there by, or are you supposed t send earlier and that is the latest?
-
On the arrow subject, it should be VERY optional. If I end up drawing someone that wants a very heavy bow, I do not have the materials to make 100# spine arrows. If people want to make arrows for the bow they are making more power to them and their generosity but it should not be expected. JMO.
Bevan
-
As far as the 4th of july I just think that the bow should be shipped by that date, if you want to ship sooner that is fine to. Nothing here is set in stone that is kinda why I think pat started this thread so we could hash out what we all want to do. If people dont speak up then there opinions wont be heard, but that is there choice. This is all of our bow trade so everyones opinion matters. As far as the arrows, This is a bow trade so we obviously cant expect to get arrows too, but if someone wants to, and feels the need to send arrows, knifes, flutes, arrow heads or a $50.00 dollar bill with the bow that is up to them I dont care lol.
-
I just got an immage of a bow backed with $50 bills, Josh. Now I have to start thinking... :P
Bevan
-
Josh i like that idea
screw arrows
i want $50 dollar bills with my bow when i get it >:D
and flute would be nice too ;D
-
Hey im just sayin I dont care what people ship with there bow ;D
-
Bows should be shipped by the 4th of July and arrows are the responsability of the recipient :)
I like to tune my own arrows :)
I bet 50's would make a great backing :D

Once all the names are in and all the info is correct the builder/reciepient will be pared up .

I bet 50's would make a great backing :D
Not thinking of $50 but of $1. I figure it would still be cheaper than some of the other backing I have used. And striking!
I will have to give this serious thought. What glue do you think?
Bevan

Bows should be shipped by the 4th of July and arrows are the responsability of the recipient :)
I like to tune my own arrows :)
I bet 50's would make a great backing :D
Fact is, with the linen content of American (and Canadian) money, it would make a fine backing material. I'm feeling kinda froggy about this idea and think I may need to jump soon. >:D
No shortage of crazy ideas on this forum.

Tite bond II would work fine

You think it would soak into the bills enough? Would you put an external coat on it also, treat it like cloth? Pre-dampen the bills like snake skin or rawhide?
Bevan
-
Just did a quick calc and just overlapping the bills a little, less than $15 to back a 60 - 66 inch bow.
Of course you would have to use the 'green back' side. :D

OK! July 4th, 2011 is the absolute last ship date! After that a real good excuse and a few of those fifties will be required. ;D You can ship your bow when you are satisfied it is finished and shot in well. We want to keep the reciepient suprizes good ones! :o I think when folks see other's bows going out and other participants recieving their new bows the juices will really get flowing. I personally want to know who my bow is going to and make the bow that he or she wants. I won't have that info until I find out whose name was chosen for me. Some of us that are familiar with building bows can crank one out pretty quickly. This can be intimidating to the new guys but we need to make it more of an incouraging situation and help whomever is in need.
For the new folks...a picture is worth a thousand words. Be sure your cameras have fully charged batteries. ::) (don't laugh) Also be aware of the background in your pics. We don't care about your new hedge or your Mustang! Good, detailed bow pics are what is needed for good diagnosis. Make the pics so the bow will stand out. FULL DRAW pics tell it all but a braced, unbraced and a back profile let us know what we are looking at. Ask questions. The only dumb ones are the ones not asked. How can you find out if you don't ask. That is how I learned.
We have 39 folks signed up for the trade already and we have 12 more days to go with the sign up so we should have a pretty good group for our trade. 8)
An arrow trade is a good idea too but it will have to be seperate from this bow trade. You can see how complicated this can be alone. ::)
I have been collecting arrows from folks as long as I have known arrow makers and have a pretty good collection so I'm always interested is arrow trades.

PAT B i have just a few questions? first, are we shipping with bow strings, and secondly, are we going to be giving to the same person we getting from?
i have a suggestion though, i think everyone should write a short note about the bow and saying their name and user name to help familiarize everyone
thanks for listening

oh i dont plan on crankig one out
thats not my style
it takes me on average of about 40hrs to get one done
like i said, probably will start on it this weekend
that just means i pick a nice piece of wood and get it prepped
reduce it down some
by then i'll be bored of working on it for a few days
then i'll pick it up again and look at it
put it in the vise, look down at my rock pile
say "screw it,im making a point instead"
that will go on nightly for a good 2 weeks before i actually start doing any real work on the bow ;D ;)
by then i will know who its going to be for
then i might jsut have enough time to get it finished and gone before may ;)

I think it's assumed that a bow would come with a string :) I'm also guessing (or maybe hoping) that there will be 39 threads started in the near future (when the names are drawn), where everyone will be showing their work in progress. That would give the newer guys a chance to get some advice, and maybe seek inspiration from the ideas of the more experienced bowyers.

Sounds like me and sailordad could be using the same shop and working on bows for this trade but never actually run into each other!
That's about the way I work too. Couldn't make an 8 hour a day job outa this, much as I love it. I need plenty of "walkaway" time.

me on the other hand, well when i get a new stave will start around 10pm maybe earlier or later, and then go to 2-3 am, then repeat the next night, after that im pretty close to being at tillering stage unless its a challenging stave

Noel, every bow shipped should be shootable on arival so a bow string is manditory. If you don't know how to make one, now will be a good time to learn. If you are going to build bows you need to know how to build a string. The person you send a bow to won't necessarily be the person you recieve a bow from. A bow without a string is a stick! ;D
A note enclosed with the bow you ship out will help you and your reciepient become more familiar with each other. One of the main purposes of this trade is the personal reactions and knowledge we will all share and recieve and the friendships made and/or strengthened. Rich emphasized this from the very beginning of this trade. Also, each bow sent out should be signed by the maker, to the reciepient and dated. Other pertainent info included should be the wood used, overall length(either n/n or t/t), draw weight and length. Some folks use "Sharpie" indelible pens for signing a bow. I prefer India ink. Be sure whatever you use is permanent and will not fade over time. These bows could easily be party of archery history in 100 years so lets let our future bow enthusiastits know who we are. 8)

ok thanks for letting me know, im new to all of this and wanted to make sure, and dont worry until i learn to make a string, i have places to have them made, iv'e used them before and was extremely happy
thanks for letting me know
noel
PS: the strength bow i was asking for in this without a string would be more like a telephone pole ;D

For what you pay for a string you could buy a roll of B-50 and make 10 strings. It is a very easy process once you have done it.

I agree. You may not feel that your bow is all that important, but the recipient WILL.

There's a link to a couple videos that really helped me in this post I put in the how-to section. There are easier ways to make a string than the flemish twist, but it's my favorite type. Check it out if you're interested:

Another situation has been brought to my attention. Bow weight!...and it brings up something else also, one of the main reasons for this trade.
First, most of folks involved in this trade are not capable of or have a desire to build very heavy weight bows; material wise or experience wise. I'm not going to put an upper weight limit on the trade but each person should be pleased enough with the bow he or she receives if they are following the spirit of this trade. Again I will reiterate...This trade is about putting your best effort into the trade bow you are building for someone else... andnot the bow you will recieve! That just happens to be a by product of the trade...a nice one at that but not the main gest of the trade.
If a 30# to 60# bow doesn't interest you maybe you are in the wrong trade group. This trade is about you building a bow of reasonable draw weight for someone else to enjoy. Ideally we want to come within a few pounds of the weight desired by the reciepient. In most cases the weight is within a 10# (ie. 45#-55#, 50#-60#, etc) range. You should try your best to end up somewhere within that range. All of these situations will help the new guys here develop the skills and confidence to build bows and not just accept any old bow that you can built. Make a reasonable goal that you can achieve and give it your best shot to make it happen. If you come in a little under weight but are totally satisfied with the results, then that is your bow for the trade. If, on the other hand you are just whipping out a bent stick and waiting for your new bow to come in please don't waste our time and efforts just to satisfy yourself.
With all the participants that will be involved this is an excellent learning experience for everyone, seasoned bowyers and newbie alike. We can all learn a new technique, a new design and the way to achieve it, or the best route to take to hit your desired draw weight at that specific draw length. Using the right wood for the desired design or the proper design for the wood you have available to you will also be part of the learning experience.
If anyone else comes up with thoughts about the trade or possible problems, please speak up. Once the due date arrives and the names are all drawn and reciepients are sellected we will start a PA Trade Bow thread to follow the progress of the trade.
Anyone that wants to start their own thread or build along for this trade, please do so. It is all part of the learning and teaching process and will help showcase potential problems and successes. And again, a picture is worth a thousand words. Pics help us diagnose problems a lot better than just you trying to explain to us what the problem is.

Everyone, I have been watching closely as this trade evolves and believe me it is very tempting to get in on it.....but I'm not sure if I can commit the time needed to build a good bow for the trade.
Is there(and I'm sure there is), a cut-off deadline to enter?
I just haven't commited to it yet. Still a big part of me wants to get in on the fun....

You can sign up until February 28th

I made a yew war bow a few years ago, 95#@30". Too heavy for me to shoot so I gave it away. ;)

Plenty of guys on the "War Bow" thread that love the heavy bows. Have you been over there to check them out?

i have, it just dosen't seem to get the same amount of traffic as this thread does, thus less responses, i really cant wait to repair the tips of my 100+ osage bow, measure it on my scale then start shoting it with the arrows im makeing( good thing next week is a vacation ;D)
-
hate to seem negative
but if i draw you,or anyone else for that matter thats wants a heavy weight bow like
it aint gonna happen
if i cant pull it,i dont make it
if i cant pull it,i cant tiller it
so sorry ;)

i know, making and using heavy bows arent for everyone, have you considered useing a come along, or tying it to a car to tiller ;D, althoug you have to worry about ripping aff the back half of cars doing that >:D
-
the car idea is a good one
however its a little tuff getting down the basement stairs and making that hard left into my work area :D
not to mention no room to pull forward to draw the bow on the tiller tree
-
Maybe we could make two 50# bows and duct tape them together.
-
I'd like to join. Right handed, 50+pounds, 26" draw, I'm willing to ship out of country.

Pat b announced: Monday, February 28, 6:00pm will be the deadline to sign up for the bow trade. No one will be accepted after that time! Once all the names are in and all the info is correct the builder/reciepient will be pared up .Also July 4th, 2011 is the absolute last ship date!, You can ship your bow when you are satisfied it is finished and shot in well. We want to keep the reciepient suprizes good ones!, every bow shipped should be shootable on arival. A note enclosed with the bow you ship out will help you and your reciepient become more familiar with each other. Other pertainent info included should be the wood used, overall length(either n/n or t/t), draw weight and length. Some folks use "Sharpie" indelible pens for signing a bow. I prefer India ink. Be sure whatever you use is permanent and will not fade over time. Once the due date arrives and the names are all drawn and reciepients are sellected we will start a PA Trade Bow thread to follow the progress of the trade. Also please reffer to post #155 pg.11, #143 pg.10 if you havent read them yet.
If anyone sees any thing that needs fixed with the list, let me know please. Also when you PM me your shipping address PLEASE do it like this so I dont have to go look and find your number and write your name, I can just copy and paste

Maybe we could make two 50# bows and duct tape them together.
Spacers gapping the bows apart slightly for pass-thru making it perfectly centershot....I'm starting to like this idea.
-
We could call it the quad limb, center shot hercules bow.
Or, the parallel penobscot ;D
-
Fantastic! ;D I've been wondering if we were going to do this here and I'm glad to see it. As pat stated it really is a great tool to inspire us to do our best and push the knowledge boundaries. I was hesitating because of several other bows in the progress but I don't want to miss out on all the fun.
Count me in. ,,,,,,,,,Right hand, 25" draw 50-60 lbs preferred, US shipping only please

Wow 45 and counting. Pretty cool. I cant commit to it right now but I'm interested in seeing the 45+ bows that will be posted shortly :)
-
I have an idea, although I don't know how many people would be interested or even that it would work. How bout a stave trade? People trading native staves by them to others who don't have those trees? For example I'd love to have some yew or Osage, but none live by me and I have plenty of other woods. If it works sweet, if not, no hard feelings.
-
digi, thats what this is,more or less
only differance is,we are reducing them down to bow size and shape and function
it saves on shipping costs that way ;D
-

Indeed :) This is going to be epic! I hope that everyone shows pictures as they progress with their bows.
I don't really check in on PaleoPlanet very often, but how does this swap compare to their most recent one, in terms of # of people involved?

im sure it is better, because im involved, the chance of me makeing a bow for you will draw many people ;D( and i'm really modest too)
but seriously, this will be epic

Yes, a 100+ lb bow is very modest for a 16 year old!
You might want to work up to that with a few lighter bows. Er what? ;) ;D
-
Cam,
I'm not sure about paleoplanet, didn't know they have a swap, but Trad Gang has 84 or 85 guys in this years swap.
-
Ya Nate, that must be what I was thinking of :) Someone mentioned another swap earlier in this thread (probably you), but I didn't want to sift through 13 pages to find the reference. Is the Trad Gang swap wood-only, or do they "cheat" with that other material that we won't speak of? ;)

im ahead of you on that, ive already worked up to there, i'm really not trying to brag, but to be able to pull 100+ at 32 only took me a week, i guess i am just blessed ;D, im actually working on another 100+ right now
-
I think both Pat and I mentioned it, we are both in on it ;)
It's anything without wheels so yeah that includes that which must not be named. I'm not really an FG guy but some of the guys on there do some incredible work. I suppose it'd be nice to have an FG around for when drunk newbies who are prone to overdrawing a bow want to shoot I can hand them an FG ;D

Having 45 folks sign up for our first trade(in a long time) is pretty good. Wait until the new bows shart showing up. There will be half again as many that will want to sign up for next year. ;D
Cam, my 60" elm static recurve I've been updating is for the TG trade. I'll be done with iot just in time to start the PA trade bow. Only one more week to go! 8)

so when will people start sending?
-
Fish,
I've got to say you're making me nervous :-\
No need to rush the process. We've got four months to build these and send them to their recipients. Part of this is to make the best bow I can. That'll take time ;)
I'm looking forward to finding out who I'm building for ;D

sorry if i am makeing you nervous, i have never done this before, and didn't know if most people send within a month or what, i just didn't want to be last to send out.
-
No worries about being the last. Just take your time and when it's done send it out ;)

Pat is right, Just watching the progress of the "other" bow trade going on is very exciting, as well as informative. ;)I know they will be some people kicking themself for sitting on the fence and not jumping in. ;D ;D I know there are some great bowyers out there reading this and pondering,,,,,,,,,Guilt ::) Guilt ::) >:D and some others thinking maybe they aren't good enough,,,To that I say get over it and get your feet wet. :o :o You will learn way more by participation then just watching. ;D

Fish, it will be next Monday at 6pm before the deadline to sign up. Probably another day or two to get the names chosen and paired up so you have a lot of time to wait before you will even know whom you are building for. You might take this time to ready yourself by selecting a well seasoned stave that will make a good bow. Start thinking about what that stave might need to become a bow and when the time gets here you will be a step ahead of the game. Until then, please be patient! That is one of the best bow building tools you can possess so if you don't have any now, that is something else you can work on between now and next week! ;)

don't worry i have patience, i just don"t want to be the last person to finish if i can, i was just wondering, if i have a large tree( 1-2ft across, either black locust or black cherry) that has been fallen for a few years, is that usable if the wood is fine, or do i need to let it sit longer off the ground, and if so, how long,( so far i have mostly had the pleasure of using pre seasoned staves)
-
Locust laying on the ground shouldn't be a problem but it will still be wet inside from the ground moisture. The cherry will be rotten or at least enough it won't be suitable for bows. You should still give the locust a year to cure out well.
Being last shouldn't be a problem. I was one of the last last year on the TradGang trade. It took me from January to the end of June to get it done. My main excuse was I was down for 3 months during that time with a bad back and couldn't over work myself.
-
What the heck. Didnt want to get invovlved because Ive got lots of work going on, but 4 months is a long time so what da heck, Ive got in mind what ill make so might aswell :D
Cesar (Legionnaire) Im right handed, shoot of the hand 45-80# at 29 draw. US shipping only please.
-
if the staves are good fro that black locust do you think someone would trade a nice osage stave for me to use for the trade, with the cherry though, its a good thing that it is one of those trees with a branch almost the size of the trunk that was kept of the ground
thanks for the help, i cant wait to find out who im building for,
-
Cherry will still get buggy and rot, even off the ground, if left in the elements....better check it really well.

i will look over it very well, but i figure its worth a try ;D
-
scratch the bark on the cherry and if it is brown leave it alone. If it is bright green, it should be OK.
You will probably have to offer more than a green locust stave for a seasoned osage. Go to the "trade post" and ask on there when you get your stave split out and cleaned up so folks can see what they are trading for. You might get another type of seasoned bow wood for a green locust stave.

well the bark on the cherry's we have are usually thick and brown to black, even when alive, but the good thing is i just realized i have 1 osage stave that might be good enough for the trade, i need to look closer, because even though it would be fine for me, i want to give the best i can
-
You have to scratch the bark to reveal the green color under the outside.

oh, ok that makes more sense, i thought you meant thebrak would be green :D
thanks, everyone here is really so helpful, and patient, especially with people starting off
noel
PS: i really wish i knew i would get into building bows this winter, i would have started to season some wood
-
Never too late to start!
The only living parts of a tree are between the bark and wood (the cambium), and the buds. Everything else it dead, wood and bark!

well, thats something i din't know that might prove very helpful ;D
thanks
noel
by the way, ijust tried shooting that 140lb bow, and the arrows were a little short, 28in, but i did get 180ish, the first shot would have gone farther, but i wasnt paying attention and it leaped 5ft out of my hand ;D
-
Fishfinder - if you don't have any seasoned wood, there's no shame in building a board bow. There's lot's of good wood for that. That's likely what I'll be using, some maple. The only "stave" that I have is a chokecherry that I cut in the fall and roughed out, but I'm not sure if it's ready yet. I personally would not want to give someone a bow made out of questionable wood.

i feel the same way, the only problem is that i have never made a board bow, but i think ill be fine with what i have ;)
-
o.k if its not to late...i cant leave my oregon brothers hanging.....blacktail.....righthand-25" draw.....50 pound range is good...no shipping out of country i am broke...HECK,i would trade for a hickory or osage stave..
-
If you dont have a GOOD after your name and info on the most recent list on page 14 I still need your address so whoever draws you know where to ship your bow. PM me the address please if you havent already Thanks
Josh
-
well i looked at my wood stash yesterday and picked a winner ;D
now i just need to know for whom
cant wait for the end of the month
tomorrow,off comes the bark
then i'm just gonna stare at it untill it gives up :D
and then i will beat on rcoks untill the end of the month :)
-
If Elktracker doesn't have all your info by the end of sign up you might not get a bow. ;D Please get your info to Josh so his work isn't made harder. He is doing a great job of collecting everyones info so please help him out!
-
I am so looking foreward to this!.........I already have plans on little extras I'm gonna throw in........silencers and a bow sock for sure........waiting to see whose name I get before I pick a piece of wood though.......gotta match the draw weight and length and such to the stave......plus some staves are just made for left or right hand specifically. Can you tell I'm excited ;D I might have to buy a stave if none of my meager supply will suit......good excuse to buy two to save on shipping ;) ;D
Darcy
-
OOOO AAAAAHH bow sock and silencers thats a nice little bonus, im getting excited for this too. It seems like every time I make a bow for myself I give it away so I never have anything to shoot lol this will give me an excuse to hold on to one ;D and give one away, only a few more days till we find out who were gonna get. I talked to calendergirl again and she said she is ready for names and info when the time comes ;D
-
Gettin fired up for this to-gotta couple started, its gonna be fun it will be interesting to see all the different styles, creations made-Hammertime
-
i think this might give me an excuse to "practice" makeing a board bow, incase the 1 stave i have wont work, and while im geting the wood for those two, whats a little more for another ;D

One of the main purposes of this trade is the personal reactions and knowledge we will all share and recieve and the friendships made and/or strengthened. Also, each bow sent out should be signed by the maker, to the reciepient and dated.

Me too. I tried to split an osage log with a huge limb coming out of it last weekend and got a weird wide but thin split. So, I split that in half and will debark, cut the splice and glue it up tonight. By tomorrow I can head down to a growth ring and see what kind of a bow is hiding inside. I gathered we're all going to do threads on our progress?
George

count me in...should be fun ;D
-
Almost time! It's getting good now. I can't wait for the explosion of bow building thats coming.

I just had a brainwave. Now I know that the spirit of this trade is to get people involved and create new friendships, but...
Why don't we have a vote when all the bows have been received, similar to BOM, but rather "Bow Of The Trade"? Nothing like a little friendly competition to motivate everyone to do their best? Maybe we could come up with some kind of prize?
What do you guys think?
-
cameroo, i personaly woundlt be interested in that
i dpnt enter BOM for the simple fact
i am to competitive and hate to loose
i am mature enogu to know this and to avoid competition because of it
if i loose it takes out all fun for me
so ifn ya'll want to do that, its fine by me
but i will say right now the bow i make will be discluded from the competition
dont meant to burst your bubble, but thats my opinion and feelings on such

That is fine. I don't understand it, but I respect your opinion :) Judging by the lack of response, I would guess that others feel the same, which is fine. I just thought it might make things a bit more interesting. I don't get too upset when losing to friends :)
If there are other people interested, I might be willing to make an armguard for a small prize... ;) If not, that's cool too. I can't wait to start building!

This is the updated list, let me know if something is wrong or needs changed and I will fix it. Also I put a GOOD at the end of your info if I have your address. If there is not a GOOD after your info I need you to pm it to me please so the person makeing your bow can ship it to you.
One of the main purposes of this trade is the personal reactions and knowledge we will all share and recieve and the friendships made and/or strengthened. Also, each bow sent out should be signed by the maker, to the reciepient and dated.

Tick, tick, tick............................................
Will we have the name of the individual we are making our bows for yet tonight or will that "draw' process take a day or two?
(Gosh I'm nervous as heck! :-\)
-
Lee, it all depends on how fast Marie(Calendergirl) is at drawing the names! ;D
-
Cool!!!
-
UUUUGGGGGGHHHHHHH I CANT TAKE THE WAITING ANY LONGER
;) ;D
-
It may take a little while to get the names drawn and pm everyone who they are building a bow for. Each person will recieve a pm telling them the person they got, what they are hopeing for as far as a bow and that persons shipping address. Thats allot of copy and paste ;D I am still pming with calendergirl to get everything straight, and I have also offered to hep her with the pming of everyone except the person building my bow ;D but we will wait and see what she says. Its 3:00pm here whos clock are we going by lol
