I used a nail once. Forget it. Now use a cheap glass cutter just to etch the glass and a hobbist torch t to go over the etch and that heat fractures all the way through. Sometimes the crack needs just a little tap to separate the glass. This technic works extremely well on square liquor bottles.

No kidding? I've got a perfect 1 gallon bottle and know where there is a pick-up truck load more in a ravine in the woods near here. :o

Better pick 'em up, Eddie, before someone puts them on ebay and makes a tidy batch of cash.

lets see...
#1- the nameless blue bottles I find hiking. very strong, easy to flake, and beautiful.
#2. Ale 8 bottles(green glass)-Not nearly as strong, but harder to flake and more durable.
#3-clear 4 sided glass wine or some other drink bottles(I don't care what b/c I don't drink it ;))- beautiful for knives, and really sharp... flakes very well!

I can get an almost unlimited amount of bottle bottoms from hiking and my neighbor(he makes beer, and gives me his reject bottles)- flatter bottoms aren't always better IMO.

Flungonin, when you say hobbyist torch do you mean the small Butane torches? Or the bigger propane ones? Or something else? You're method sounds better than the nails I've been working with!

The small Butane torch. I have used the other butane bottle that Wal-Mart sells that is used on caming stoves. Either of the butane torches works. Just put the flame on the etched glass and follow the etch.

Or how about the bar trick where you have beer ( water please ) in the bottle almost full, then slam your palm forcefully onto the mouth opening. That sends a pressure wave to the bottom where it just pops off clean as can be.

have a lot of luck with a nail on bigger bottles I use a small lag bolt, I put the bottle in a plastic bag so when the bottom pops off it doesn't hit the ground, didn't take long to figure that out ::), bub
