Vine Maple Bow for a Good Friend
« on: October 22, 2013, 12:45:55 am »
I have a friend in Georgia who I consider a brother. He has a 7 year old boy who just got into archery so I told Jerome I would make him a bow that he could shoot with his son. It is a vine maple bow, 68" ntn 50# @ 28", that came from funky, deflexed stave that had a natural flipped tip on one end and a S-shape to the front profile. This stave took a lot of heating and wrestling around to tame it and get it into a usable shape. I probably had 6-7 heating sessions into it including a good heat treating. The deflex is almost all natural with only about a half an inch of set coming from tillering. The stain is Fiebing's leather dye, the finish is 8 coats of tru-oil buffed down to a satin finish. The handle wrap is leather with leather lacing done in John Strunk's style. The tip overlays are bison horn and the string is fastflight. Thanks for looking, I hope you enjoy it.

Another reason to love vine maple, and to go get some more. Just what I needed  ;D

Black locust. Black locust everywhere.
Mollegabets all day long.
Might as well make them short, save some wood to keep warm.

Thanks Bryce, I was pleased with how it shot. I think it will be a nice shooting a beginner.

Thank you, Joe.

Thanks, Gordon.

Huisme, It sure is great stuff I can't wait to crack into some more vine maple from this bunch. Have fun with yours.

dbb, Thanks for the compliment.

Thanks, Dave. Not sure about the photography, I think it could be a lot better. I think Jerome will enjoy shooting it if he can find some time away from medical school.

Now that's some finish work!  Nice job on that one. I've been wanting to mess with finishes like that, how do you fade from dark to light with the dye? Is it more coats or thinned out? Thanks

Nice work buddy.  I really like the finish work.  It looks like that stave might have presented some subtle tillering challenges, and it looks like you got it bending just right.
"The bow is the old first lyre,
the mono chord, the initial rune of fine art
The humanities grew out from archery as a flower from a seed
No sooner did the soft, sweet note of the bow-string charm the ear of genius than music was born, and from music came poetry and painting and..." Maurice Thompso

Thanks Paul. It's actually easier than it looks. I stained the whole section dark brown first. Then I stained the beginning black and saturated it well. Then I used a successively drier rag and rubbed in the transition until I got out to the faintest traces of black with a very dry rag. I hope that makes sense. I can explain it further if you'd like. I've only done this with the leather dye which is alcohol based. I don't know how it would work with other types of stain but I imagine it could work similarly.
