Thanks Paul. It's actually easier than it looks. I stained the whole section dark brown first. Then I stained the beginning black and saturated it well. Then I used a successively drier rag and rubbed in the transition until I got out to the faintest traces of black with a very dry rag. I hope that makes sense. I can explain it further if you'd like. I've only done this with the leather dye which is alcohol based. I don't know how it would work with other types of stain but I imagine it could work similarly.
