My cedar longbow (pics)
« on: June 05, 2007, 07:13:44 pm »
This is a longbow I just finished up today, it's made of cedar, so it looks like the size of a mini warbow. It was a fun and quick bow to make (I made it in about 3 hours or so from stave to tillered). It is mostly sapwood, so I made sure to make it pretty long, because I didn't want it to break! At about 47lb@27", it's quite light for a 'warbow' (now before you warbow guys hop on me for calling this a warbow, I know that it is very light and short, so you don't have to tell me! lol). It is 63"ntn, about 1&1/2" wide at the handle, and a little over 1/2" at the nocks. It also has osage tip overlays. I don't really like the color of osage with the cedar, so I might change it sometime. Anyway, the finish is linseed oil with a wax coating over it. It holds the water out pretty well.

Good looking bow.
I have three ERC staves drying at home.
When finished, I hope one of them is as good a bow as your is.

Thanks for showing me how it is done.

Thanks so much guys.

Koan, Yes, I love the simplicity of bend theought the handle bows, I am liking them more every time I make one.

Justin, that was the main reason I couldn't help but make a bow out of it, I couldn't bear to see this nice piece of wood thrown away.

David, I am learning as well, so we are on the same page. But thanks for the compliment, the main thing is to make allowances for a slightly brittle wood (wider, longer, ect.).

Thanks, Mamba and Loki.

Kegan, yes, it does shoot pretty well, I like it.

Thanks Jbell.

Here is a picture that better shows the tiller (I hope! I think I'm holding it at a slight angle).

Tiller looks good, love the heart wood color on it. I agree with ya on the Osage overlays.
And yer pulling it like a warbow watch yer ear might need it in the future ;D
Overall its an impressive bow, well done!!!

I love the contrast of the heartwood and sapwood. The tiller looks spot on. Nice bow!

Very nice job Sean.  You're finding a lot of time to build bows--don't neglect your studies. ;D  Just kidding.  Great job.  The tiller is very nice.
