New Father's Day Knife Blade
« on: June 30, 2008, 12:15:42 am »
I had a little time on my hands this afternoon and the weather was so unseasonably cool for Oklahoma.  :o I went after a piece of rock, (I'm not even sure what it is) that my daughters gave me for fathers day.  It's all nicely spalled and heat treated. IT KNAPPED LIKE BUTTER.  :o  This one had a slight bend to it but I was able to thin it down reasonably well, (for me any way) and get most of the bend out.  It's pretty sharp too.  I've got one piece of antler shed left in the shop but it doesn't look very good with it.  I'm thinking a nice piece of Osage or maybe a piece of Mulberry that I have curing for a handle.

The pocket Knife in the picture is about three and a half inches long.  It was my Dad's Boy Scout Knife.  He picked cotten all summer when he was a kid to save up to buy this knife back in the 1930's.  He gave it to me a few years ago as a Christmas Gift.  It's razor sharp but I don't carry it much for fear of loosing it like I do most of my other pocket knives.  :'(

What do you all think?

Thanks guys, I'm going to try and get it hafted to something, just not sure what at this point.  I've got to get something done with the deer legs in my Man-Cave Ice Box.  The wife said she's buying 4th of July supplies and the deer legs and goose wings "gotta go".  It's time to get serious about processing some sinew. ;)

Looks good Mike! I've come across some rock that resembles that but it was Pederanales. A peice of osage would look good on that I'm sure :).

Thanks Paul.  I'm not sure what it is.  I guess it could be Pederanales.  My daughters got the rock at Missouri Trading Company.  It's really good stuff.  Unfortunately the picture makes it look like Johnstone, but its a lot waxier and soooooo  much better to work.

That could possibly be novaculite if it came from Mtc, she deals with a lot of that stuff - I like working it.

Great looking blade Mike. It looks like waxy, heat treated Novaculite to me.
