Steve, try hide glue and a bit of soda as a binder. For me it works excellent.

Haha, sorry Steve. Baking soda of course, Aaron said it already. A little bit mixed into the paint makes it creamy, much more comfortable for painting details.  LOL Sprite - that's good!

I played around with pigment but wasn’t impressed with my result.  Colored pencil came out real nice on the rawhide with tung-oil.  The oil really made it happen.  Just to wrap the handle...
