Cabbage Palm Quiver and Cane Arrows

I've been wanting to do this for sometime and I've quite procrastinating.  It's not finished but the toughest part of getting the base of the quiver woven together is done.  I'm working on just twisting more cordage from the spears and filling in the body.

I'll post pictures as I go.  He are some from the other day...

Is that sawtooth palmetto, Steve? The new fronds from the cabbage palm is good too. I guess any of the palms, Royal, coconut and other also can be used.
 Looking forward to seeing the finished products and seeing Angie and you soon.

I added a fifth rib - gotta be odd for the "over and under" of weaving and then got started.  I used the fine hairlike threads (I call it silk) from the fronds to make a string to tie the ribs together to start.  I'll get better pictures of that.

All I'm doing is pulling the strips off the fronds, doubling them up and twisting them together to make cordage.  As this is my first run I'm not being very slow about it and I'm sure I could make it cleaner.  One mature frond yields about 15 feet of twisted cord.  The coolest thing about this is I should be able to complete the whole process cutting just a few fronds from the single plant and no outside material.
Talk about useful plants!

I've got to make a tropical hut for kicks out of bamboo and palmetto/palm that I just cut in my neighborhood, sometime.  Anyhow...more to come.

Pitch and cane shafts.  These are coming along.  I've started 3 feather fletching the other evening.  I'll get some updated pictures this evening.

Pat, I figure it's saw palmetto but they are really tall...about 8 foot and not bunched.  They have grown wild, I didn't put them in.

I tried something similar (basket made from similar leaves) and found that when dried the leaves shrink alot and the structure become a little loose

I'm noticing that the material works easiest slightly dried out.  Not green not dry.  Just cutting it and giving it 24 hours is working well for me.  It loses a lot of water quickly.  My question is about how well it will hold up when totally dried out.  Might have to spray it with something but don't really want to.

Anybody have any bright ideas on something that it could be sprayed with to help maintain structure with out using a heavy synthetic?

once dried is pretty durable but I think it's not worth the hassle of coating it
I'd use it until it wear out than do another one
