Remembering where you were.

Almost embarrassed to ask this. If I'm out in the shop working on a bow and I get called away for something when I get back I see the bow in the vice and I can't remember whether I should take more wood off or take it to the tree. I'm not senile yet ;D it's just when you're doing the same little routine over and over sometimes you just lose track. Do any off you have little tricks to keep you doing the right thing without doing things twice?

For me it doesn't matter if I've been away for 5 min or 5 days. I have to take it to the tree before removing any wood. I'm usually lucky if I can ever rember which limb I was working on.

i draw pencil line across the entire area i want to remove wood from, if i dont see any pencil marks i go to the tree ;D

I do the same thing.  I scribble with a pencil over the area I want to remove wood, then take off the pencil marks.  If there are no marks, I exercise it and go back to the tree.

Not that I have a whole lot of experience but I use the pencil method too. I'm so scatter brained that I wonder what I'd do without it, I spend a lot of time trying to figure on where I put it down though. Lol

Well at least I'm not alone :) :) :) Pencil is a good Idea. I wonder if sidewalk chalk would work.

Chalk will work. I'm a carpenter by trade so I write measurements/ directions etc, on wood all day. I don't hear same with bow making. Cheers- Brendan

I was just scraping on a bow tonight and my neighbor came over and talked to me after I did sixty hard scrapes on one side. I talked for a while and then said, "Crap, can you remember if I flipped this bow around or not?" I'm still not sure. I guess I'll see when I put it on the tree tomorrow.
