Mitch, 1/8" is plenty thick and you can go less. Good luck with your first.
 Thanks guys.

Don, you can see in these pics how the riser sits above the plane of the limbs. When done this one will be at least 1/4" above the limb. This is what keeps the handle area from flexing thus popping the riser off.

Got it now! Thanks Pat

How did the dowels work Pat? Did you see a favorable change in your glue up?

Pearlie, the dowels worked like a champ. Best thing since sliced bread. With the dowels at the handle and small clamps at the tips the backing didn't move at all while I wrapped the glue-up.
Pappy, this feels alien to me. I used to do more backed bows but my heart is with selfbows.
 Thanks all.

I worked on her a little today. On the long string now but soon should have low brace. Just haven't had much time to work on her.

Hi Pat,
Really enjoying this...first bow I ever shot was lemonwood...nice to see this one coming along...when I saw that sunny window I thought you got a new shop!  Then you must have moved back to the basement in the last pic.  Stay warm!

Rough, dirty work in the basement, Rand and cleaner work in the sun room.  ;)

I just checked the reflex. It has gained some. I glued in 3/4" and ended up with 1/4" off the form. As I reduce the belly the reflex is increasing. It is sitting at 1 1/4" now.  My goal was a flap profile when shot in.
