gonna be a Katt bow
« on: January 31, 2013, 04:25:32 pm »
Quite a while back Katt asked if I would like to trade bows. Of course I said yes but I was building 2 trade bows(last year) and I didn't know when I would get to it. Katt said OK and that was that...or so I thought. A short while later a cool little osage bow with snake skin backing and a horse hair tassle showed up on my door step. I contacted Katt to thank him for the bow but had to tell him I hadn't started one for him. He had no problem with that and said to send it whenever I got around to making it.
Well, I finally had a chance to work on this bow here and there over the last few months and I'm nearing the end. She will be 61"t/t, a little over 1" wide at the fades and with a deep, round belly. She will pull between 50# - 60#@26" when done and have cow horn tip overlays. I'm not sure if or how I will dress her up when the time comes but I still have about 10# to take off her and get the tiller squared away.
  Heres a few pics...

I think that a lot of the time the prettiest bows have nice handle wraps and a nice finish, there are some pretty backings out there too, backed or unbacked that will make one pretty bow.

When people ask "why didn't you do that the first time" you can be sure that they  have never made a bow before.

Thanks everyone. It feels good to get back in the shop. Its been too long.
Pearlie, I think the outer 1/3 of the right limb tip looks a bit stiff.
I've glued on cow horn  tip overlays and packed out the back of the handle with leather. I'll shape the tips and handle overlay  tomorrow(I hope!  ::) ) then get the excess weight off and see how she shoots.

Pat, I love seeing your bows.  They're like looking hot girl in a little black dress: simple, elegant and makes your heart race a little.  Nice job.

Some are sleek, like a Cheetah.  This one looks more like a Jaguar.

My thoughts exactly, Bob  8)
Katt, this style is a little different from what I usually build but is one I've wanted to build for a while. My original thoughts were Pope and Young longbows but shorter. Narrow and deep seems to take less osage to get weight and osage can take the rounded belly...and short enough for horseback.  ;)
Damn Hedge, now I gotta go take a cold shower!  ;)
