is it junk... Vine Maple crack
« on: March 22, 2012, 04:59:59 pm »
I was dry heating in some reflex and this was there when I removed it from the form. It does not go all the way through the limb and I filled it with crazy glue. I have some goat rawhide. Should I continue or scrap this one?

You have super glued it. if you put goat over it, I would continue on with it. What are your target specs?

Go for it.

I usually always try to work around such problems.
Its the best way to learn.

I was lookin trough a highly regarded bowyers personal collection, I noticed lots of wraps and similar decorations.
I asked what they were for and he said to hide mistakes.

In my mind thats what makes a true artist. Make the mistakes look intentional.

And if it blows up?
Just make another.

Bevan it's was intended for a kids bow but now I'll be #45@26 or so and make another for the kid....  don't want it to go BOOM on a kid :(

Where the crack is located, I think you will be fine with goat over the top. That is pretty tuff stuff for as thin as it is.

Question how long do you leave the ace bandage on the bow before you remove it. The last one I did I left it on overnight and it was a bear to clean up!!!

What glue you using? I usually do what you did, at least overnight.

If you put superglue in the crack and then clamp it tight I think there is a pretty good chance it won't cause any problems.

Oh nevermind, I see that you backed the bow with rawhide.

Only thing I did different was after the hide was on, wipped the edges to get any excess. In the future I suppose you could use the blue masking tape and cover the belly. That might help.

Was the wood dry? That looks like a check caused from the water escaping from the heat. Usually not  a problem. It is with the grain. Superglue it and clamp it and leave it overnight. Jawge

Kip, when i use rawhide I take the ace bandage off after 2 hours and push out any air bubbles it might have.

My vote is to go with it.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.
