Finished in time for Christmas
« on: December 07, 2008, 11:17:21 pm »
My nephews girl friend called me last week and wanted me to make her dad a bow for Christmas ???
I told her I can't make a bow in a week or two. But she was in luck... I had just finished tillering an Osage bow, 60#@28" with 1" of reflex. She wanted it to be 50#@28". I thought well I could work it down 10 more pounds, but what about set, after shooting it in at 60#. I was kinda hesitant to do it but she really wanted this for her dad and the only way I could get it done was to use this bow. After re tillering it to 51#@29" it took about 1" of set. The skins are Diamond Back from Mike Yancey. They were a pleasure to work with. This is only my second set of skins to apply and the first one was one I had skinned myself. I have to say I'll be calling Mike for some more.
Hope he enjoys his Christmas present.

Specs...
51# @ 28"
62" NtN
1"@ fades tapering to 3/8" tips.
Cocabolo overlays

Thanks for lookin'

That was very nice of you John.  ;DThe reason you ended up with a inch of set is your inner limbs near the fades aren't working as much as they could.   ;)

Congratulations on a very fine bow. You did well. Actually an inch isn't bad but for the next one-it needs more bending just beyond the fade area. Also, it needs a scrape or 2 the last 8 inches or so. :) Jawge

Thanks guys.
Ryano and George, thanks for the comments. After taking the pictures I seen that I had not nailed the tiller as good as I had hoped for. On the tree I thought it looked good and after putting about 75 arras thru it I seen it had started bending mid limb more. I didn't notice it as much until I took the pictures last night. I already had 9 coats of Tru Oil on 'er and decided since it shoots good and hard and were I look, it would be fine. It will probably hang on the guys wall anyway. :(

You've got to be proud of this one. Excellent gift bow. Bookmarked for Dec Self Bow of the Month, too.
