This is a 62" ntn static yew I made up last weekend while my wife was away. This isn't a build along, just some pics I took for Clint (little bugger always demands pics from me?), feel free to ask questions all the same. I'm going to add boa skins in the coming week, and I need to knock some weight off it and get it back to 28". It'll take it or break. I have no use for short draw bows :)
First pic - Just straightened it out laterally and added maybe 1" of reflex to the main limbs, not much at all.
Second pic - Floor tillered dead nutz
Third pic - steamed for 30 minutes and statics bent in
Fourth pic - Full brace, perfect tiller out to 26"
-
Oh sure there's nothing to it- just knock another one out at the weekend while the good lady wife pops down the shops. Don't know what all the fuss is about! ::)
That looks like it'll be a killer if it survives the 28" draw! :)
-
Nice bow love the profile !!
-
Likely have bit more success if ya taped/painted that wall.
But it does look fairly sweet!
-
Well done, my friend.
I have been doing this for a long time...late 80's.
Bowyers like me have taken bowyery as far as we could.
As I age, the bows/year have decreased and it takes me longer to make one.
Bowyers like you and several others have taken it further. I feel self-bowyery is in the good hands of the younguns.
Keep up the good work.

Looks good Pearly. Just so you know, I have a use for short draw bows ;D
-
I'm a sucker for a nice flip tipped Yew bow...

Looks like a good un. Nice job Chris

Ahhh, you beat me to it!
-
Clint the only problem is you short draw short draw bows. By the time you were done this thing would draw about 18# :)
Seiddy you know how easy yew is to get a bow from. I don't have 8 hours in this one. The meat just falls off the bone with good yew!
-
Looking good Pearlie. She'll look better all dressed up. 8)
-
Dude, it's October already.
Change your calendar.
-
Jawge, I often think the same thing, good job on that one Pearly
-
26" or 28" draw length? Draw weight?
-
It draws 26" now. I want 28", so it will either take it or break.
-
Man oh man you should live next to wizradgoat. You 2 would crank out one after the other of sweet looking yew bows. You'd have to take a truckload of osage with ya though.I'll have to communicate with Carson some soon....lol.
Just sweet looking lines to that bow as is.Anything else put on it is a bonus. You should'nt lose too much going to 28".No tick/sound as a brick....heh!!!Once the woman's away we get to play.....lol.If Clint does'nt like it I'll take it.....lol.
-
It's got that classic pearlie bend going on, can't wait to see her bend all the way
-
Pearly You have a pic of when you sawed the stave in half.? I knew there was 2 bows in that piece of wood, glad to see you finally working it.
-
just some pics I took for Clint (little bugger always demands pics from me?)
He's after some pics of the D....
bow, the D bow, wow you pervs... >:D

Goat if you look at the pic when it was on my caul, you can see the udder half leaning against my wall.
-
Nice looking bow for sure Chris!
In the braced pic, do you think it's a little stiff on the outer third of the right limb?
Patrick
-
Maybe about where the sheet rock seam is.
Patrick
-
I'm pretty sure you stole this bow out of my shop! I swear it looks exactly like the bow I'm working on now, But you would have had to glue on 8" of limb. 28" won't be any problem! 62" is a mighty long bow, it would take that if it was 10" shorter. Love the look of this bow! Looking forward to seeing your finished pics

I thought the same, but when I draw on it that section moves. I pulled it to 20" on a stick and checked it with my scraper, perfect gap down through that area. Ill try to get the boss to take a "full" draw pic tonite, we can peek at it again.

When it comes to building a bow, I LOVE the classic old school static profile build. When it comes to shooting/hunting a bow gimme a 65" straight osage bow all day and twice on Sundays :)

I think I gave you a 65" straight limbed Osage bow ;)
Looking good Chris. I need to try some yew one of these days.
-
Yes you do Jon!
I'll await the bosses decision Chris!
Patrick
-
Very good looking bow. I love the flip tips on a bow.
-
Lookin' good so far Chris.

I agree with ya Chris on the 65" straight limb osage.....But I'd have a hard time not shooting that old school static ..... You know I'm a sucker for a nice look'n static, I think you helped me through my first one and I've made a few since....... ;)
Very nice looking so far....That's a beautiful yew static...

That's a beauty, Pearly. Even without the skins and finish on.
-
Nice job Chris, nice curves.

Classic lines Bud ! Bob

Clint gripes about my dirty shop and you gripe about my calendar, I get no slack I tell ya'! :)
-

Thanks Pat. The boa skins will make me feel a lot better about 28". I'm sure it will handle it, but if it decides it doesn't want to carry the load at least I know the skins will make it less violent and hopefully both my eyes still work afterwards. Id hate to tiller a bow with one eye.
-
Another hat...... ::)
-
Looking really nice man
-
Is there a post on how to make a jig with curved tips
-
Joe I just grabbed a 2 x 6 x 24 and used a quart paint can to make the radius. No science or tape measure behind it all. The metal strap is just a chunk of galvanized duct metal screwed in.
-
Looking real nice there bud!
-
Looking good, and I agree with you on the building and shooting preferences.
-
Another beauty.
-
Ok thanks you
-
wow, that`s all I can say,

Fact is, we can reach a lot higher because we stand on the shoulders of giants.
-
JW, you got that right. Without fellas like Jawgey Poo, pappy, Pat, Marc, Steve and so on. I wouldn't be half the stick bender I am at this point.
-
That looks like it going to be a smooth and fast shooter. Great job!
-
Great looking bow! I'm excited to see this complete. I keep checking this post looking for new pics, I think you are falling behind Pearly.
Eric
-
I tillered some weight off last night and shot it at 27" about 30 times. Its visibly faster than crap. I'll get 28" from it.
-
Eventually you'll even stop shooting 65" straight bows.
-
Very nice Chris, resting and braced profiles look great. You'll have her all slicked up for me to see up close in a few weeks for sure and no doubt it'll be nice. Looking forward to it.
-
Beautiful lines, beautiful wood...yeah, that's looking sweet.
-
Lovely bow. Should make a great hunting bow
-
Very nice PEARL. Looking forward to seeing it bent over.
-
Thanks guys. We have some windy warm weather sneaking in this week. I'll take that time to finish this up and skip hunting. Hopefully I can add a few pics as I go. The boa skin from Pat is beyond incredible. Never seen such a perfectly handled snake skin. The inside was so meticulously cleaned that is doesn't have that thick rawhide feel, its quite pliable. Immaculate is the best descriptive.
-
C'mon man. This build is taking forever. Get that stick finished up and post some good pictures of it.

Haha, I was just thinking the same thing
-
You two jokers got my pics this weekend, you know what I was up to. Missing bucks and taking names!
-
Better leave him alone guys. He's in shock. >:D
-
The blow blew up last night. I put the string on it and thought Id shoot a few short draw shots. I braced it, and tugged the string maybe 20" and a knot let go into four pieces she went! Oh well. Start another, that's two in a row for me. Bad luck this fall :)
-
NOOOOOOO! :( :-\. Sorry to hear this Pearl. It was a sweet looking little bow.
-
for the better, that thing was ugly... >:D
-
You just never know when a knot will or wont be a problem.
-
I know when they won't be a problem. When I leave them in the tree and walk away. ;D
-
Dang that's a shame pearlie, she gave up like the cubs bullpen😈
-
NOOOOOOO!!!!! But I was looking forward to seeing this finished! Dang Gum It! It happens, just make sure we all have a bow to view by this weekend that you have at least started. 3-2-1 Go!
Eric
-
That sucks and a punch in the gut....What do ya think does it just dry out a little more to do that? You've got another stave there though. If I remember it was a cleaner stave. The worm will turn.
I'm after another red cedar here too.I've taken my punches in the gut from that stuff. All my fault though.....lol.
-
Man, Pearlie. That really sucks. :(
-
Good thing you have a pile of yew now!
PatM, if we left knotty yew in the woods there wouldn't be many yew bows around
-
Hate to hear that Chris was looking forward to seeing it in a few weeks...
DBar
-
Dang, I thought I was the only one that destroyed yew. Sorry to see that Bud, it was looking good. Osage is King ;D.
-
That's two broken bows in a row for me Eddie. I quit!
-
Man that sucks Chris. Would have loved to seen that one bend before hand. If you ain't breaking you ain't making! >:D
Patrick
-
That's two broken bows in a row for me Eddie. I quit!
Yea, Right. :) The last Yew I broke was a spliced preform that was the last one that Glen St. Charles put together, I was sick.
-
I've made two Yew Bows over the years - one blew up late in the tillering and the other was finished - hanging on the Wall at Matts place. I don't trust the wood at ALL. Grab Ya a nice piece of Yella Wood and crank one out Brother ! Just like ridin' a bike - Bob.
-
I'm pretty sure that if you had taped and painted that wall, the Yew bow would have survived a LOT better! Right Mike? >:D >:D >:D
OneBow
-
I'll take a pure, knot free, pipe straight, piece of Eastern Red Cedar over Yew. You should try a piece, Pearlie >:D ;).
-
A lot of hate going on for yew! It by far my favorite to work, I think its the only bow wood I've tried that I could get short bows with long draw lengths and not break them. That being said, I've never finished a bow from osage, only started one. I have a stave from Osage Outlaw sitting in the shop that I may one day start. With all this love for Osage, I looked forward to really working with it.
Eric
-
That's too bad. That was looking nice! And yew is a great bow wood knots or not. Cheers- Brendan
-
I would use yew full time if I didn't have osage. Its great bow wood, that knot just decided it didn't want to hold together. The next one could have the same knot and live for 10000 shots. The bow I broke prior to this build was osage. It happens!
-
Just a bad run for ya Chris. Wanna start breaking rocks next? >:D
-

I think he would be good at that Scott, he is getting plenty of practice right now! >:D

Breaking rocks on a hot sun. I fought the law and the law won :)
