But I thought the conversation could turn to smoke belcher accoutrements for a while.

Curly maple end cap with brass finial filler plug. Have yet to install a spout plug because for some unknown reason I used a 1/4 inch drill bit for the spout and I do not have a fiddlepeg of that size. Will see what I can turn up for that department.
Only the spout hole was done with a power tool, all the rest was done by eyeball, saw, rasp, file, scraper and pocket knife. Even final finish and polish was done by hand. This sat in a box under the bench as a "ghost project" for 4 years. I got a call from a friend that works with providing scenes, costumes, and models for famous western artists to photograph so they can later paint them. What with that Revenant movie coming out, now all the artists want to paint mountain men and that means Jim needs all the gear he can get. He asked me for rifles, bags, and horns and I came up short one powderhorn....so, it moved back up the priority list. I also found four ruined or near ruined buffalo horns that I had once tried heating and flattening. I might be able to rescue ONE and finish it, but it will involve some black magic (epoxy/F-G) on the inside.
When this one comes back from the photo shoot in Kansas, I am gonna see if I can sell it since buffalo is not common to the historical era that I play around with.

Nice looking horn jw

Not sure why I don't make more of them, kinda easy and fun. Oh yeah, sources for good quality horn have dried up and when you order two dozen horns, only one or two is worth a nickel!

JW's got horn...................

Nice JW'b, we must think along the same lines. I just flattened my last Buff horn today, a first for me. And, like you, I've got a 3/8- 1/2" hole to fill. I'm thinking brass. :)

The brass finial on the butt needed a 5/16th drilled hole for the knurled socket piece. I think this is the larger size that is commonly available in muzzleloading supply catalogs.

Here's a couple of horns I made just waiting for hunting season....

Couldn't find any nice wood with straight grain for that gunstock? That crap wouldn't even BURN STRAIGHT!
('Scuse me while I go to the fridge for another serving of sour grapes!)

Sweet work both of you guys.
-
Nice JW.
How long does it take you to turn one out?
-
Apparently something over four danged years! All told, I think I spent two hours with a four way rasp to get the rough exterior off and drill the spout. Then four years later, curing time, I spent about 10 hours on it in two days. If I used a belt sander, I could shave a lot of hours off that time. If I had a decent way to clamp such a freaking ridiculous shape, I could save a heck of a lot more...but nothing is flat, parallel, or clamp friendly!

Beautiful work JW , ya that is one of my biggest troubles, no way to hold them secure except in your hand ,that gets pretty old pretty quick. :)

Very nice craftsmanship fellas.

Nice horn JW
Thanks Leroy

That's a beauty JW. Well worth the wait I'd say.
I like the looks of a buffalo horn but mine are all just plain and simple.

I am no Roland Cadle, or Art DeCamp, that is for sure.
If you wanna see some stuff that will melt your shorts, look up hornguild.org and click on the Photo Gallery.
-
Sweet. I like that a bunch.
-
Man if I keep looking at this stuff I'll be at risk of picking up another hobby just so I can carry some sweet looking gear. Heck I even tried to win the raffle for the powder horn Pappy made at the Elm Hall raffle last week just to have it around to hang on the mantle and look at. I've never black powder hunted and gave up gun hunting some 20 years ago to focus on bow hunting exclusively. I've always thought that if I ever went back to big game gun hunting it would have to be with a smokepole.
Nice looking horn JW.

JW do you know Roland Cadle & Art DeCamp?
-
Greg, the smell of Black Powder is addicting. Hunting squirrels and shooting over and over is a blast.

Only by reputation! They are two of my favorite horners.
