Clint (Osage Outlaw) let me pick out an Osage stave from the Monster tree when I was over at the Classic in 2014 :). Thanks Clint.
I've been wondering how to handle it an what to make for ages, 'cos I wanted to do it justice. (Don't want to rush these things ::) )
Do I make it with the rings running back to belly to use the natural curve or do I take it down to a good solid ring?
I decided go down to the ring and try for a flight bow (24" draw). It looks like I'll need some heat work to straighten out the bend, although I'll loose some length off that far end. But let's get her down to one clean ring first.
I've recently made a Hickory flight bow that shot 299 yards >:(, you'd think it could make one more wouldn't you? I drew it further and it chrysalled. Hopefully Osage, (being' King an' all ;) ) should get me out past 300 yards.
I'm thinking about 70# at 24"
As work progresses I'll post it on the flight bow forum.
Any design suggestions(suitable for an Osage newbie like me ;) ) are welcomed :)
Del
PS. The stave is about 1 1/8 x 1 3/4"
-
Osage responds well to dry heat del, but if you do some statics. Steam and boil thats a great looking stave enjoy it
-
Gonna be watching this!
-
I'm glad to see you finally working on that stick Del. I'll be watching closely. Good luck.
-
I've made a couple of bows from Clint's monster osage and I can tell you it is excellent osage!
-
Damn, from all that huge stave you will be doing small flight bow! ;)
-

Not necessarily ???... I may do a flight Warbow that meets ILAA regulations, but say 28" draw rather than 32".. maybe 90# at 28?
Get that ring followed first then reappraise.

How is osage doing in warbow configuration, I heard it has significant handshock

Dunno, haven't tried it... yet.
If I did I'd make it more like a Victorian style ELB but heavier.
Del
-
Well I'm surely interested to see how this turns out! Good luck 😊 (Got my eyes peeled)
-
Welll. I got 2/3 of the way following the ring above the one I wanted (just to be safe)...
Then Mrs Cat :-* wanted to re-model the decking in front of the double patio doors... ::)
So now I'm sooo tired we ordered take away fish and chips and I've had to have a shower, cat nap, and open a bottle of red wine... so it's not all bad!
Anyhow the decking is nearly done and gives much better wheelchair access :)

I'm "retired" as well so now I just do what the voices in my wife's head tell me to do... ???

So, were you guys not similarly obliged to heed such mandates prior to retirement? I fear I may have already 'retired' while still working everyday! :o :o :o

"Heeded", yes, but with the caveat, " After I get home/have time from work Dear..." ;)
-
Thanks god I can go to work - the pension must be a hard thing.
Come on Del, let's see what you do.
That candidate of stave would become a static if it would be mine.
-
Isn't it done yet????
-
I've roughed it out...
Now I know you all probably think I'm bonkers, but I couldn't lay out a straight line along it... so rather than trying a lateral bend at the grip, I'm going for two bends at the root of the skinny tip sections (possibly hooked levers)... see red arrows on pic... it looks damn weird , but I'm sure it will all be fine. ::)
In order to get myself a bench mark, I took my only other full sized Osage bow to test it (45# at 28") I got 206 with a flight arrow, 197 with my regular arrows.
I've cut it 58" tip to tip, I may steam (or heat) in a bit of deflex reflex... ( the deflex so I can string it! :o ::) )
Del
-
I think I would agree with that assessment.
-
I agree too.
Del, osage works very well with dry heat. I'd also seal the back well. I've had well seasoned osage check while heating. Shellac works well and can be easily removed later if needed.
-
Coming along nicely Del, you will easily make those bends.
I also work mostly yew like yourself, but Osage sure is a treat to work.
How are you liking it so far?
-
It certainly makes a change to Yew, I quite enjoyed the ring chasing, except I started chasing the ring above the fat one, just in case I messed up... of course it was fine, but that's no prob.
I'm glad you all approve of my bend strategy... I thought it might cause howls of derision!

Nah, it's your fans howling for more!

Looking great so far Del. I would bend at the red arrows also. Heated osage smells great. Enjoy!

Burgers grilled with osage is called fine dinning..............:)
Hey Del...... man this is great stuff I'm watching this one.
DBar
-
With Yew I carefully protect the sapwood back... I didn't bother with the Osage, hope I didn't get it too hot. Blimey that stuff bends easy, I probably over did it a tad :-[
Mind the coroners will get rounded off anyway so most of the scorch will get removed.
I straightened the tip nicely and added a hint of recurve at the base of the lever/slim tip (I'll let you know which it is when the bow's finished ::) )
Del
-
Hopefully the "coroners" won't be involved :o
It will be another awesome bow I'm sure :)
-
Got the alignment fixed, I did manage a little shift at the grip. I've put a tad of reflex in.
I'll get some temporary overlays on, tidy it up and see how it flexes, maybe tomorrow.
Del

It's starting to look like a bow.
-
It's starting to look like a bow.
Or maybe a moustache?
Del
-
Not enough deflex for a mustache, lol.
-
There is something about bending osage with heat. It fights, fights, fights, then suddenly it says
LET'S DO THIS, MAN!
Looking good, Catman Dude!
-
This is on a long string (only just long enough to slip on) about 55#, it's been tidied up a good bit.
Just having a look at the bend
I may put in a hint of deflex and reflex the tips some more. I think the weight isn't far off but I don't want to brace it until the tiller is looking good.
Del
-
That osage is going to spoil you Del.
-
Dunno 'bout spoil me, it sure as heck is scaring me.
I've just had it to 60# at about 192 from a low brace
Del
-
Don't take much osage. ;)
-
Coming along nicely, love the color on that wood , darker orange in the handle fading to yellow on the limbs. Must look amazing with the finish on!
-
Looking great Del. Welcome to the dark side!

Harumph ::)... I think you'll find the inch symbol " is directly above the 2 on the keyboard, so it's 19"
I've put in about 1" of deflex and I'll curve those tips a bit more this afternoon.
Del
-
Looking good Del, can't wait to see it all finished up. :)

Maybe it's a French keyboard ? Mine has the @ sign above the 2. ;D ;)
The bow is looking good Del.
-
Del....Is'nt working with osage about like working rerod once in a while???Compared to other woods I mean.It rings like a tuning fork when you tap it....ha ha ha.A little harder on tools and sand paper but....I've got good faith your gonna make a good one.
-
She's nearly there :)
I've added the deflex and improved the curve on the tips.
I haven't quite had the bottle to puller her to 70# yet, but it looks pretty much like it will be 70# at 24"... bump hat and safety glasses maybe?
The pic is about 65# @ 22" :)
I'm cleaning up, rounding corners, relieving the arrow pass just a whisker (no real shelf... maybe later as part of tuning once it's been shot).
Maybe get to shoot her at the weekend.
Del
-
That is looking very good. :)
Pappy
-
Steady as she goes here I see.Nice smooth lines Del.Hope it performs up to your liking. No need for hard hat....lol.
-
Del...Actually when I first started to work with osage a bow making friend gave me a saying about working with osage that has always stuck with me.Thinner is quicker..that being width wise I mean because of it's density. With certain designs that is.
-
This build a long is going quite well. Looking good Del. A bit heavy for my taste, though. Something I'd shoot about 5 minutes then be ready to go lay down a while.
-
Man, maybe I'm stronger than I think, I've seen a lot of folks say they get tired fast pulling more than 50lbs but I've literally shot my 65#@33" manchu bow all day long with no issues, and that's not to brag it's to say I find it surprising as I'm a big fat computer nerd, lol.
-
You've nearly got it whooped Del. I'm curious to see the flight results you get out of it.
-

Yeah, it's for flight, so I'll only be shooting a few arrows from it.... then I'll have a bit of a walk to go fetch them ::)
Del
-
Thats looking good Del, just for funises try a 500 grain arrow through it. They are starting a new 70# class in the broadheads.
-
Woo...
I took the string from my last flight bow and tried it at 10 yards.
I could hardly draw it at first 'cos the weight is so early ::), but then I got into it, like shooting a mini warbow. It bangs out my regular arrows (about 400gn)with a bit of tape round to mark the 24"... not that I was likely to overdraw it.
I was going to get my son to video me but he said " You've broken your arrow!" :o
Just as well he spotted it, it was fractured at about 19", just right for skewering my hand :o
I'll make up some arrows and give it a go tomorrow hopefully. Feels pretty quick.
Del
-
Scratched that I meant thicker is quicker...sorry....lol.
-
I've cut in a small shelf and tried it with a 11/32" 390 gn arrow...
It buried it an impressive distance into the target and actually hit home straight and true.
Felt smoooother and sounded less like a car crash ;D
I think it would be very good for hunting dinosaurs ;)

Yup. I'll be there... could bring it along for 'show and tell' ;)

You could probably go a little deeper with that shelf Del.
-
Why not? :) looks interesting. I suspect there will be quite a few bowyers of one kind or another there too....
-
You could probably go a little deeper with that shelf Del.
yeah, I'm following my principal of do about half as much as you think ::) (it works well with chores ;) )... I can cut it deeper later if needs be... I didn't want to risk spontaneous disassembly :o

Great work Del 8)
Looking forward to seeing it all finished.

I made up a couple of flight arrows 24" long 5/16" shafts heavily barrelled 325 grain and 266grain I also took a couple of 490 grain 11/32" regular 28" arrows.
My first shots were a bit tentative (chicken ::) ) getting 200yards with the 490 grain and 267 with the best flight arrow.
I went back and had another go with the flight arrows, watched 'em onto the shelf, good stiff left arm... string just on the finger tips...draw back the last inch and loose in a crisp movement.
I saw 'em go off pretty clean, tiny bit of porpoising but no waggle, lost 'em as they got high, but I could see they were going where I ponted 'em.
Del
.
..
Oh, you want to know how far? O:)
307 yards  my first laser rangefinder verified my me shot of over 300yards :)
-
Thats a decent shot, how much difference between the heavier and lighter flight arrows?
-

I hadn't marked 'em so I didn't know which was which, but I don't think the longest wasn't the same one each time (one was a slightly tight fit on the string so I used that to see which was which) There was only about 5 yards between 'em each time.
I think I could get away with a smaller diameter shaft and maybe take the nocking point down a whisker.
probably some extra left in the bow, I could probably put in a little more reflex or draw another inch or two, but I don't want to over do it.
She's worth tidying up some more.
I did put a nice leather facing on the shelf (red Rolls Royce upholstery leather, suede side out)
Del
(I should confess there was some tail wind :-[ )
-
Your lighter arrow should have outshot your heavier arrow by at least 60 yards. That would have put you in world record territory. Try a little more weight up front on your lighter arrows and less taper in the front. More of a front to rear taper.

It was all a bit of a rush to finish the arrows and get out and try the bow before the sun went down.
I'll doing more work on the arrows some time soon, I've another bow on the go at the moment. I don't often do two at once, but the Osage leaped off the shelf and grabbed me round the throat wanting to be made into a bow ;D ::)

There is a reason Osage is king! Great work del, thanks for taking us along
-
Here are some pics, I used the spliced Osage that I made ages ago as a reference (I'd forgotten most of what I did on that bow >:( ). The little Osage shorty was made from an off cut and makes a great demo bow, showing what a tiny stick can do >:D
It's not polished up yet, I may do a little work on the tips, but I want to try some other arrows before I improve the bow too much and ruin it!
Del

No shame in how you handle your osage, Mr. H. What you have there stands up to anything you might have seen or handled at Pappy's place down in the holler. Brag if you want, you got room swagger some!

I normally swagger just before a bow explodes ::)
Cheers. ;D

wait til after the distance shot then swagger. ;)

Or carry an empty bottle of Montepulciano d'Abbruzzo as you swagger and maybe the spiteful Godz of the Bow will mistake your swagger for stagger!!!

You may have been under the influence of that "creek water" getting passed around in the canning jars. Over-hydration can do that.

Nope, sorry, no vids on this one :(
it would be nice to video a flight shot with the fancy effects they use for golf on TV where you get the track of the ball... arrow in this case. Doubtless outside my price range and I don't expect they'd like me turning up at the Ryder Cup with a flight bow... ?

A beauty of an osage bow there Del.

Ooooh, the Ryder cup of flight shooting! I love it, America vs. UK

Hey Del! Mighty fine work! If you don't mind me asking , what's the limb thickness on that bow? From the fades out.. Thanks in advance!

Hey Del! Mighty fine work! If you don't mind me asking , what's the limb thickness on that bow? From the fades out.. Thanks in advance!
OK, here are some thickness dimensions (width is 1 1/4"), every inch to start so you can judge the fade. (to nearest 0.1mm)
Sorry about the mix of metric and imperial, I just find it convenient. ::)
0", 22.6 mm, width here is 30.4mm
1", 19.4mm
2", 17.8mm
3", 17.4mm
4", 17.2mm You can see it's settled down now. so I'll go every 6"
10", 15.4mm
16", 15.1mm
22", 14.5mm, width here is 14mm
Del
The tips are relatively stiff
-
Awesome, thank you so much Del!
