Just finished up this Osage lever tip bow. It draws super smooth, shoots flat and is dead in the hand. It is sturgeon skin backed. Tip overlays are bison rib bone. The handle wrap is ray hide. The wiggle in the upper limb tip puts the string favoring the arrow pass, which turned out nice since the take down sleeve is somewhat wide. Finished with shellac, then alternating linseed oil and beeswax.

Saw-weet! Beautiful work!
-
WOW Carson, classy in all categories! That is beautiful work buddy.
Just sitting at breakfast and checking parallel what's going on at PA, I stopped drinking my coffee seeing your bow!
Congrats!
-
Must agree Simson´s words too! Nice bow!
-
Oh man that is a thing of deadly beauty! :)
-
Fine work and a nice work - a bow we all dream of it.
-
Amazing!
-
Whaaaaaa...
Dude that is just gorgeous, you've packed just about everything into that bow BUT... without overdoing it.
Superb, very tasteful.
A snakey lever :o that's just cool... bonkers... but cool
I doff my cap to you.

Beauty!
-
great looking bow Carson, again!
-
That's some exceptional work. What a treat to see. Congrats. Hope it shoots as good as it looks.
-
She is sweet Carson stellar work ad usual.
-
Thanks guys for the nice comments!
This was my first take-down and also my first lever bow, so it was a slow build. During finishing, I was hung up on how to nicely transition the takedown sleeve to limb. After racking my little head for some time, I remembered Richard B's takedown build and did what he did with cork. http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php?topic=45456.45
Thanks Richard!
-
awesome craftsmanship...a work of art!
-
Is there a Bow of the Year contest, cause I think he just won....
-
You are an artist!!!
-
Another superb bow Carson, you have really great attention to detail. Beautiful bow in all aspects. Great photography too.
-
That is one of the prettiest bows I've seen yet! Love the sturgeon skins!
-
Nicely done . Arvin
-
Wow Carson, that's a beautiful bow. Great looking tiller and that handle wrap compliments the skins nicely. Nice work!
-
very nice congrats :)
-
Very cool. Still kicking myself for not picking up some ray hide a few years back, saw some for dirt cheap and thought "What am I ever going to do with that?"
-
Thanks guys for the nice comments.
Jackson, this was the first time I ever used it. It was kind of a pain to trim and sew, but in the end it was worth it.

Nice all around! Love the super clean finish work and wish I could do such!

That's awesome! Nice work!
-
Very nice! Awesome bow Carson.
-
Ole!!! Bravo!!
-
Very nice bow!stellar finish work!
-
Sweet bow. I like the arrows too. Well done.
-
Thanks guys!
I enjoyed making this one. I did some heat corrections to it over an outdoor firepit using an old iron gate as a form. Took my Keenan Howard built stave master and the billets along on a family reunion campout and did some fitting of ferrules while fielding questions from extended family.
I like the lever tip design, and I am thinking I will have to try it again. Might try higher proportion of lever on the next one.
-
Oh yeah!!thats the good stuff
-
good job. That is one of the most beautiful bows I have seen on here. Very nice considering the company you are in.
-
Dude, I'm speechless. Every detail is fantastic!
ed
-
Lovely!!!
-
Wow that is a really nice bow. I love everything you did on it. Congratulations.
-
That's beautiful across the board. That combination of skins is really something. And, great pictures!
-
Thanks for the the nice comments guys! :)
-
Awesome, I like mollies and this is a really nice one
Didn't expect it to be takedown :p
-
Shit, Dude. Awesome take down. One of the aspects of this site is the quality of the pictures. Yours seem to get better all the time.
-
That's a beauty for sure. Just gorgeous. :)

Very nice bow Carson.I can tell all of the hard maticulus work that went into that one.Beautiful.Fun though I'm sure.I'm in the process too of making a self bow holmy for a friend that wants a 31" draw so I made mine 68" TTT with 10" levers.
-
ok I have to say one of the most beautiful, I've seen in a while. Well done.
chuck
-
that`s a really nice lady in all aspects, congrates. Hans
-
Thank you for the comments guys. I don't know what to think about some of these comments. They are too nice. I think most of the credit goes to the sturgeon and ray for providing such beautiful hide.
Beadman, I am looking forward to seeing that bow. I am working on some 30" draw bows right now, a yew and an osage. It is always a challenge to get those extra couple inches out of a bow without just making it overly long.
-
Yea Carson. If you want the arrow to go faster.Pull it back farther......lol.Simple.These big fellas with there 32" draw or converted compound shooters still coming to their original anchor need to shoot self bows too......lol.
The 68" I'm making is the longest bow I've made in a few years.Usually it's anywhere from 60" to 64" with a 28" or 29" draw. That's what I like.I hope I can do as pretty of a finish job as you did with yours.Part of bow making is in the makers' minds' eye.Beautiful well made bow Carson. Those hedge staves I sent ya ought to be pretty seasoned by now.I did make an sinewed all heartwood bow out of the yew.Think I sent you a pic or two.
-
Beadman, here are the two bows that became of those two pretty little sticks of gold you sent me. I do recall that sinew backed yew you sent a pic of. It was smoking hot...would love to see it posted up here on PA.
A bow I made for Dad:

A bow for a fellow in Pennsylvania:

You certainly did those 2 pieces of wood justice Carson.I'm not saying that mildly either.I'll look up some of those pics of the yew you sent me.Not quite the pictures you've got of your hedge bows but the forum should get the drift.
-
Well, I guess I was pushing it a little too far with the narrow snakey lever. Looks like a little side strain plus a touch of grain run off, led to failure. I open to hearing any alternative theories. Regardless of the how and why, it is has been a valuable learning experience for me. Enough rambling, I have to go make a replacement.
-
Another Pic of the break
-
I...I think I'm going to cry....she was a beauty man...
-
Yep I'd say you took that lever to the limit.... :(
DBar
-
Owwwwchhhh. Sorry to see that - it was a beauty.
-
I am very courageous to show a bow near your post.
Your bow is legendary - wow ...
Peter
-
:( Sucks... It is a terrible feeling to have a bow break. Guess you could V-splice in a new lever if you wanted to *shrug*
-
Faaaawhat!!!!!That sucks.
-
Loon, that is the plan. I will be making another bow to replace this one, but once time allows, I hope to splice in a straight lever of osage. I think there is just enough meat in the transition from limb to lever to allow for a clean and sturdy splice.
-
It felt like someone punched me in the stomach when I read your edited title. :( :'( That really sucks. I'm sure you can make it better than it was before.
-
It felt like someone punched me in the stomach when I read your edited title. :( :'( That really sucks. I'm sure you can make it better than it was before.
For me, it was in the groin region. :o ;D
That is the plan...to make an even better bow.
-
That sucks Carson, you always hope it'll happen a little earlier on, not after you do all the finish work.
For sure attempt to splice in a new lever!
-
Real pity, really. Looks like some lateral tension from the whoop caused it. That was a gorgeous bow. You might splice in some light, straight Levers. But I suspect you still have one left on rack, no? ;)
-
Splice a new lever in the limb.
-
Stuff happens. The bow is beautiful work. You'll be better because of the accident.
-
I'm really sorry. It was a beauty, man. :(
-
its still a killer attempt and it was gorgeous while it lasted. You owe it the rest of the bow to splice in the lever. If anyone can do it you can.
-
SWEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
-
Man, that is a shame, that whoop was pretty cool looking. Can't wait to see your fix.
-
I have come to the conclusion, that if you have a curve like that,, it is good to slightly overbuild,,, I think it causes more stress on the wood than straight,,
nice bow, and I am sure you can splice and fix,, thanks for sharing all the info ,, very insightful,, :)
-
In one of the pre break photo's some of the rings near the back look pretty thin near the levers. Thin rings can definitely make the difference with osage if unbacked.
You might have mentioned it earlier but did the bow go whilst bracing or shooting?
-
Man I hate it when that happens, especially when it has gone to someone else, good luck with the repair, I am sure with your talent you will come up with something, we all push the limits a bit from time to time, sometimes they bite us. :)
