Title: HHB "Sunrise"
Post by: blackhawk on May 19, 2014, 09:38:22 pm
This hophornbeam was cut back on March 23 by my buddy Jon(straightarrow)and his friend and I,and on April 26 it was flinging arrows  >:D I normally don't do the quickdry thing anymore as I have plenty of seasoned stock around, but this one just was screaming at me to make a bow out of it,so I did  :D And boy oh boy am I glad I did,and didn't wait any longer...this thing has become my #1 selfbow...its that good!!!!  ;D I had this one down at the classic and shot it a couple times down there, and have been shooting since then...ive just been too busy and such with other things to snap some pics and try to do it some justice and post n share it with y'all(almost a month later)...

Heres the stats....66"ntn...51@27"...16 ounces mass...1.1" wide at the fades... .980" wide at the handle/arrow pass... .300" wide tips... paduak tip overlays...horn shelf glued on wrapped under a leather grip...two tone dye job(red and honey amber)and it bends slightly in the handle

Classic bend combined with vintage Gibson Les Paul.  Good stuff.
.980" wide at the handle/arrow pass...
Sounds like someone has been having fun with digital calipers.   ;D

I saw that hanging on the rack at the classic when you weren't around Chris, knew it was yours even before I got up close to look it over. Very nice bow, really beautiful when seen in person. Bet it shoots a mean arrow from the looks of that full draw.

Smokin' hot bow! Really like the way you display it as a jewel in the woods. Your pride in it clearly evident. Would you care to share any personal insights in with working HHB? I mean in relation to say Osage or any others you might want to relate it to. Thanks. Ron

Thanks zenart...in my opinion as far as white woods go and in my area hophornbeam is the best whitewood I have available, and the best whitewood I've used in general...I'd say its in my top five fav woods with osage being number one of course, but its up there on the list with yew, black locust etc...you can almost make it to similar dimensions as osage pending on the quality of the piece(big factor you need to be able to read in general with any wood)..and in this case with this exceptional piece it is made at osage widths...the key to it tho really is in tempering it...with any piece of wood regardless of species I tiller it till its ready to brace, then stop and do my heat shaping, correcting, and tempering all at once...and as I finish the tiller out I care full monitor my set and loss from its starting position and if it takes normal healthy set then I leave be alone(as I did with this one)..and in most cases that one time is enough with most all woods I use... rarely have I ever tempered a bow twice..only a handful of times...if ya do your part it'll do its part for you..but tempering really helps this wood,or should I say enhances it,cus it does do well on its own without it as well

Thanks pappy ;)

Thanks will :)

Thanks Greg...atta boy in going to get ya some of the white gold

Thanks Kenny...sorry...the dirty hippy in me just don't like clothes when he doesn't have to wear em  >:D  :o ...

Thanks Donald...I'll go back and make em smaller if you think they need reduced? ;)

Thanks 4dog.....lol...you got that right

Thanks Blackhawk, for taking the time to give detailed HHB info. Helps a lot to get this kind of feedback for each particular wood, what it's like, how to work it, all that good stuff. I appreciate it bro. btw- 'Sunrise' causes me to reminisce of a hot yeller Z/28 Camaro I once had.. put a trick flame job on 'er.. total chick magnet.  8)

That is a lovely bow, well done

I just got back from a trip to Quebec, for a wedding, and the B&B we stayed at had a hill behind it that was 75% HHB, probably upwards of 100 Ironwood trees.  Many of them were 6" in diameter and up and several were straight with little twist.
Title: Re: HHB "Sunrise"
Post by: blackhawk on May 21, 2014, 10:00:39 am
Thanks Marc....hopefully ya got some  8) straight hhb is tough to come by in my neck of the woods even tho were loaded with it...funny you mention it about a lot of em being nice...I find that a lot with hhb groves...once u find one there's always a bunch more around...and most the time its all junk...but when you do find a good one here,it seems like the grove contains several good specimens...must be a genetic thing I'm guessing?  This bow(and its sister) doesn't even have 2° of twist I bet...there clean clean clean, zero ripples on the back, and straight about every which way..truly a pleasure to work with, and IMO heavy war bow worthy wood...but what the heck am I gonna do with one of those ;)
