Title: Del's Bows on TV on YouTube now
Post by: Del the cat on January 01, 2014, 06:05:16 am
For those who missed Tudor Monastery Farm Christmas Special here's a link to it on iplayer.
I'm pleased with the footage, although it's a bit brief.
The archery action starts at 40:00 (yes it was a long wait  >:( )
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03ndb8c/Tudor_Monastery_Farm_Christmas/ (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03ndb8c/Tudor_Monastery_Farm_Christmas/)

Here's the YouTube link. Which should work everywhere.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fgb0vviwSQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fgb0vviwSQ)

The intro sequence must have been cobbled together at a later date, as they are not carrying my bows, but the real action is all with my stuff.
There is some good footage
Ruth Goodman was shooting a little 35# Hazel'bark on' primitive flatbow, and shooting as far as Peter Gin and Tom Pinfold! She had the lighter bow but was overdrawing to a full 32" whereas Peter and Tom strugged to reach full draw.

Just finished watching it Dell brilliant.
We are all now famous by association

I was wincing when the bow was held at full draw, I was shouting at the t.v., lose the thing man for heathens sake.

Well done Del.  Good stuff.  The little hazel bow looked really nice.  The whole segment looked fun, authentic and traditional (apart from the doublets and hose but they can't expect to make bespoke fitted garments for everyone involved I guess!  Must have been awkward as heck shooting in those!)  Then again, I imagine the majority of people attended Azincourt 2015 won't be in much better...

It only has to make one person wide eyed and excited and it's done a good thing for trad archery.

What a shame they chopped all the bow making out.  Still...

I guess TV documentaries really don't fanny about do they...

That was the last one, promise.

Arg, won't let anyone not in the uk watch. Still awesome though. Can't believe they had you go to all that trouble tillering bows in period tools and garb, etc, not to use the footage!

Sorry I can't view it here Del, sounds informative and entertaining. Congratulations on your contribution.

You guys in the US can watch it on alluc.to as a free streaming site.  It may not be particularly legal however so I can't recommend it at all...  ::)

The Christmas special with the archery isn't uploaded yet, but I'm sure it will be very soon.  All the other episodes are on there.

D'uh... so much for the internet... I just don't get what's the point of not allowing viewing from outside uk ???.
Someone has recorded it to CD for me, I'll see if I can post it on my blog eventually.

Hi Del,

I missed this message but ended up watching the programme anyway (because archery was mentioned). Then I saw a familiar face...

Nice looking bows.

Here are some stills..
Once you have seen these the NSA will get yo ass >:D
Here's the opening shot, I aim straight down the camera lens (for safety the arrow isn't nocked on the string, just held between my fingers alongside the string) and some others.

It's quite interesting (or maybe not) watching me draw up at the camera frame at a time, I come up just over the target line and then drop solidly onto it.
Del
(It toolk 'em ages to get the arrow out of the camera lens >:D )

It did while I was making the bow as it got very draughty sitting on the shave horse...  :o

Least you got a codpiece! If it had been set any earlier (say Agincourt period) there were no codpieces.  Separate hose for each leg not joined in the middle - your underpants are on full display for the whole world to see...

Hello pals, just a tip, you can avoid country restrictions using a web browser plugin called 'hola' https://hola.org/ (https://hola.org/) . With this plugin you can see any video from any country.

That worked perfectly, thank you! I just watched it, very cool, too bad it was such a short section. I'm sure it will end up on youtube shortly to join all the other small videos on english archery. Nice seeing your bows in action. You seem like a pretty good instructor.

Who would have thought that there would be so many good green leaves on all of the trees in the background at the end of December in Tudor England? !! ;-) ;-)

Would almost say it looks more like ... September? ;-)

Arrrggg how did I miss this? I've been watching Tudor Monastery  Farm and loving every minute of it yet somehow missed this Christmas episode.  Must watch now!  Del - brilliant stuff - and they have footage too of you making a bow?  We insist the BBC releases this in the national interest  :D

NB for anyone who doesnt know this was filmed at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum which is awesome and one of my favourite places to visit.

Worth watching just for your bows Del. I did however find it a little disconcerting that they kept banging on about it being winter and the solstice etc. but all the trees had summer foliage. Again though your bit was awesome!

Nice footage! It's just so hard to convince people to let go of the string as soon as they reach full draw... beginners and archers alike  :P

Cheers, I was a bit miffed that they wouldn't even let me see the other footage for my personal use! It was a glorious summers day on the South Downs when we filmed it. I pleased that I didn't sound like an ass, that's the beauty of being mic'd up, after a while you forget and they get nice natural footage.
Mind I did wonder what the heck was going on at the end of the day when this bloke came up and shoved his hand up my shirt! :o He was retrieving the mic!
Here's a shot of the filming... I think my mate Roy was a tad distracted. :-* She was one of the crew/researcher, the other researcher was gorgeous too. After the filming we got them shooting the little Hazel bow that Ruth Goodman is shooting in the pic. They both really got it and enjoyed having a go

How do you keep the bark on the Hazel Del? The only times I've tried this it's pinged off. Is it to do with the season it was harvested?

Luck mostly, I rub it with linseed oil and planty of beeswax polish to keep it supple. I've had it stay on a 35 and 40# bow. But I've also had it lift on a 40#
I do it as a way of keeping a clean back, if it stays on fine, ifr not, I'll pick it off.
