I was looking on ebay just trying to find people that are totally lying and I have pics to back it up. They are just screen shots of what he said and a pic of the proof he is lying. He says "there is no twist" it's a mulberry stave but I want you to keep in mind that quote.
-
What twist? Looks fine to me ;)..........Art
-
I see no obvious discrepancy.
-
I don't see a problem there at all. There's a slight twist at one end, but you'd either cut it off or tiller it out. He's not exactly lying, and if he wanted to trick people he wouldn't photograph the stave would he?
Not sure sitting on eBay just to find people lying is the best use of time either...
-
The stave doesn't look twisted to me. Look at the rings in the heartwood and look at the bottom of the stave. If it was twisted the bottom wouldn't be flat. Looks like the tree dipped in there on the left side.
Is lying about twist in a stave worse than lying about changing unsafe tips on a bow you sold?
-
Might be a little twist on one end but not a-lot. Can't expect a whole lot for a 15.00 dollar stave. Dean
-
It's not twisted, it just wasn't split into pie shaped wedges.
-
mmmm, i think xmas vacation is a little too long for some people.
-
I say no harm-no fowl. Once You get down into the usable growth rings, it squares up. Bob
-
if he wanted to trick people he wouldn't photograph the stave would he?
Yeah, doesn't make sense. That's like if I took a picture of a bag of dog poo and listed the item as "brand new Mercedes" or something. That's not to say everyone on ebay is honest though!
-
PEOPLE LIE ON THE INTERNET?!?!?!?! NOOOOOOOOO, WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO?!?!?!?!? THANK YOU WOOD BANDIT FOR OPENING MY EYES TO THE HARSH TRUST I WOULD HAVE NEVER KNOW OTHERWISE!!!!!!!
-
Bowyers are hard to fool when shown a picture. That one looks OK to me. Ebay used to have a lot of really bad wood for sale but things have gotten better.
One thing I do notice a lot of is the poor quality of bow reproductions in a certain Native American "style". The sellers are hoping for an uneducated buyer to come along and take the bait...
I have for sale this wonderful, handmade, a hand painted Apache Style bow and 4 arrows. It has a 43 lb. draw at 19 in. From tip to tip it is only 39 in. Ideal for hunting in thick brush/woods. Arrows are 19 in. in length, not including the tips. The bow stave is made from maple, backed with elk sinew to reinforce and protect the wood from cracking when drawing the bow. The string is 3 ply nylon, with servicing in the middle for a comfortable arrow knock and release. The arrows are hardwood dowels, and have a steel heads filed out of a kitchen knife. Bird feathers for fletching.

P.S that was sarcassm for those of you guys that didnt know that people can be sarcastic online.

No piece of wood is perfect. That is about as straight as they come. If you think the wood will make it self into a bow than choose a different hobby and stop bashing people online ;)

Hmm isn't that odd? And what are some of you guys doing right now? This is to osage outlaw and whoever else is being a :o right now: I seriously think you guys should just shut your mouth because you are acting like you are 2 years old. Really you think your funny but it is degrading me and I am just a hair away from leaving this site because nobody can seem to get along for 5 seconds. I see teasing and joking around and stuff but degrading people constantly means you don't have anything better to do so oh leave the site. Everyone on here is just trying to get along, pass info, and just over all pass time. So if you aren't following that then you are less than worthless to the nice people of this site. I thought bowyers were just awesome people that were giving and loved helping people and just having fun. You are making new people want to quit bow making and stop getting on this site because you are NOT a bowyer. It isn't just making bows that makes you a bowyer, it is the MENTALITY of wanting to help people learn to make bows and just have a good time passing on info that you learned from another BOWYER. So yes, I AM a bowyer. I am just helping people or trying my best with the given knowledge of mine from reading and hearing people say stuff and funding what works for me. Now either be a bowyer or leave the site because nobody wants you here if you aren't willing to be one.

Clint's been here a damn long time bandit... Much much longer than you. I'd be careful before you call someone like that a worthless 2 year old. I got lots more to say but I'll keep my mouth shut this time.

Before this thread gets locked for name calling can we take a look at this stave? Now to me it did look twisted. I was surprised when people started saying it wasn't. I put some lines on the picture for reference. Looking at the red line and the top black line it looks twisted but if I look at the two black lines it is much better. Are you saying that you would cut along the blue line?

I have kept my mouth shut since I first got on here and he had been pestering me since. I am not calling him a worthless 2 year old but I am calling the way he is acting that. ATLEAST towards me. I just want to feel like I can help people and many of you are making me feel worthless. I am giving all I can to help people and they are making people blow me off so either I leave or somebody is going to have to just stop acting like a child and keep their mouth shut as I have. Some people just need to be told when to stop and obviously they can't figure it out if I stay quiet even though they should. I hate these huge whiny arguments but for some reason some of you can't just let me be me and help people. That's my goal on here. Along with bragging about my bows....lol
-
You think people would get on the internet and tell lies :o
;)
That stave looks good to me. I've made bows twistier than that without thinking of the twist at all. I you chased a ring the twist would be completely gone, and as is it just adds a wee bit o' crown.
Now the bows on ebay, that's something that gets under my skin, especially since there are honest people following the auctions. Hinge here, a foot of stiff wood there, runoff over there... They're not all that bad, a couple are honestly priced for what they're worth and I'm guessing that's why there aren't as many followers, decent bows for fair prices, but they're the exception.
Can we calm down a bit? Bandit hasn't been here all that long (neither have I, I'm just more quiet ;) ), so maybe we can give him the benefit of the doubt when he makes these mistakes? I'd like to defend someone's reputation too, but not to the point that things escalate between myself and anyone here. People will read our defense of the seller, note your guys' superior experience, and that'll be that. The guy throwing gas in the fire can be left alone to burn himself while we're out shooting, so to say :D
-
Wood bandit, how long have you been building bows?
-
I'm not bashing anybody. Instead of bashing people with items for sale maybe you should post something on how to identify twist. that is if you are truly interested in helping people learn.
-
Wood bandit, how long have you been building bows?
That bow with the "amazing tiller" (not my words so you know they must be true ;) ) was my 12th bow..... I think. I am in the teens though
-
You must realize that a lot of bowyers on this board have been building for 20 + yrs, Myself included. What may seem undoable to you,(THE STAVE) but is very doable to others. Yes, they are giving you crap, but you will be doing the same in a few yrs...don't let it get to ya! ;D

Sure looks like a little twist to me. maybe not a lot but I sure wouldn't call it NO TWIST. I wouldn't call it straight either. That's how it is discribed by the seller,
How long someone has been building bows has nothing to do with twist in wood and I dont care if someone has built bows since they was two and have been a member here before they where born. If that person said that stave was straight with no twist, I would disagree with them. Terry

What in the WORLD is the point of this idiotic, pointless and self serving thread?
Wood badit, I certainly DO NOT appreciate you name calling, rudely and disrespectfully calling people out. You young person are out of line.
I teach kindergarten and I have not had a student behave in the manner you are behaving.

agreed, now its time we tell you to stop. stop purposely going online to find some one you can call a liar. there are only a few people on here that get treated the way you do because you so blatantly insult our inteligence. you say you wanna help teach other people how to make bows, then stick to posting in the how to and build along section. heres a link to it, http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/board,6.0.html now go post something educational and helpful.
-
WB, I apologize if I offended you. I have given you a bit of a hard time lately. You are about the third kid that has been on here lately that has had the attitude of knowing everything. It really aggravates me when someone with little experience throws advice around like they have been building bows for 20 years. Dishonesty is another thing that really ticks me off. I'm not the only one that calls you out on things that you post. I don't go around bashing every body here. I have to get pretty aggravated to make a negative post about somebody. I'll leave you alone and won't say anything negative towards you. I think your posts in this thread have shown your maturity level enough for everyone to see.
Now on a positive note, you do make some nice bows. They are well tillered and look like they would be good shooters. You should stick with it and stick with this site. Take advantage of the vast knowledge that is shared on here. Try to not be stubborn and listen to the criticism that people give you on your bows. They are trying to help you out.
-
I really just wanted to let this go but while we are on this topic. Woodbandit you strike me as a talented young guy but you are not an expert on EVERYTHING. Granted, none of us are but you reply to posts with these authoritative answers that are 'less than accurate'. The one that pushed me over the edge was a response about string winding that, if followed, could have hurt someone. That's were the line gets crossed. I know this will probably offend you and that is not my attention but sometimes it's OK to listen rather than answer.
-
Well said Clint. Bandit, you and I had a dust up a while back if I recall, and as a result I rarely comment on your posts, not out of spite or anger, simply that your nonsense gives me tired head. You come on here in complete anonymity and call people thieves or crooks. People who have no idea that these things are being said and cannot defend themselves. THAT, is not helpful or kind or very manly. Yet, when someone calls you out as a thief or a crook, and does so in the open you start complaining about how unkind OTHERS are.....See the dichotomy? Listen more. Show a little humility. Treat others with a little more respect and you wont have this problem.
-
I am sorry that I offend everyone and don't help at all and post "completely worthless" things even though I have been making strings since I was 8 and apparently don't know crap even though my bible is the bowyers bible. This is my last post but someday you will hear about me. I am sure.

Everybody posts some bad eggs at some point. The distinction is a person's willingness to acknowledge this and learn. You make good bows most of the time, but people as new as you and me can not be an authority on anything.
Your making strings since you were eight is the same justification you dismiss when you are told many people here have been making bows for 20+ years. Knock it off.
But then, you're not posting anymore. Maybe not reading.
We tried. Your loss.
-
Bandit, even though you are a know it all little kid, you do have the right to be on this site. You just need to learn to be a little more humble and spend a little more time listening to what these people have to say about bow building. Many of these people have been making bows longer than you have been alive. I am sure you know how to make good bows and it is certainly your right to share what you know but, you have not been alive long enough to consider yourself an expert. I certainly would hate to see a young person who is interested in building bows turn his back on this site. You can learn a lot here.

I'm with Jack here

I have to say that I am really disappointed. This is sounding like some of the other trad archery sites that I no longer frequent because of childish squabbling. Who cares if the stave is twisted or not? Unless you have something constructive to offer, why say anything at all? Is there something wrong with remaining a student and never being a teacher? How about we post what we've done that we are proud of and replying to posts with respect and humility. I for one am here to learn from you all.Just my 2 cents.
