This stave won't be without it's challenges, especially for me. (I was hoping to use the Yew stave I posted on here a couple days ago but after splitting it, then next day I noticed very slight signs of checking in the heartwood...likely too wet yet, so I sealed the snot out of it and put it up for another day)
Anyway, here are a few shots of the tricky bugger I'm about to dive into... (Besides, can't let George have all the twisted fun on here >:D)

Thanks for looking!

now thats a malice phallus....yup....your sick for enjoying such wood<---------------- and thats where you say look whos talking
-
VERY nice hunk of wood Lee. I love those types. Straight ones are fun once in awhile, but nastys really get me excited.
-
Do I foresee a center shot bow in the works here. I have a similar candidate in the works. I'm hoping the stiff fishing arrows won't whack the insides of the knothole. It should be interesting to see how you work around that knot regardless. Josh
-
The knot should lie just below the bottom of my handle...in the fade, hopefully that won't cause me too much heartburn???
-
I see. I thought you were going to use the knot hole for an arrow pass! Josh
-
LOL, I suppose I could if I shorten it a bit and really scratch my head hard >:D
-
If you did build it that way , you would have to use 120# spined arrows to keep paradox to almost nothing . Otherwise the striking the sides would certainly be disastrous! Josh
-
Are you going fishing on the snake river? That should be a beauty of a bow. Cant wait to see it done.

Remember to make it extra long so that if the weight comes in too light you can "pike" it. >:D
-
This one is for just Lee alone:
Might make a better bow "perch" for Cuda!
-
looks like it is going to be a fun build.good luck with it.can't wait to see it finished.
-
Justin & JW, you guys are too funny!
Perch for Cuda, indeed! LOL
-
You will learn a lot form this stave, successful or not. I have no doubt you will be successful. Looking forward to your progress.
-
Yes Sir!
That is a good lookin piece of Osage you have there.
Should make a Looker of a bow!
Look forward to watching your progress.

OK folks, need a little input with the layout on this bugger. Based on length this is pretty much here the handle and fades have to lay but based on the knot I am trying to decided on the length of the fades. I've never made my fades longer than 2" but have drawn on 3" fades as I "think" I need to protect as much of the integrity around the knot as I possible can...or I am way off base in this thinking? Many Thanks!

Not an expert on working knots yet, but that would look pretty sweet in the fade
-
I thought that was to mount your bowfishing reel?
-
Hmm, I suppose if I have to dig that branch stub out I could mount a reel down there but I think a shoot through spool mounted off my handle area is what I am likely going to do.
On a progress note:
I lay'd out the rest of the bow...fades, limb tapers, etc and ran her through the bandsaw. Took my Shinto to the profile lines and got her cleaned up good and figured I'd start to "quickly" chase a ring or at least determine my back ring. OH LAWRDY, do I have my work cut out for me!!! This is probably the most uneven, non-crowned back on an Osage I've ever even considered messing with. This one is lining up to be the biggest challange in a stave I've ever tried, gulp. :o
Wish me luck!

I don't know. It looks like you've got plenty of wood around that not, I wouldn't worry too much about it. In the fade or just outside, I doubt it's likely to move too much to give you trouble either way.
