I have a quick question?
What is the best brand of beer to buy for the bottles? I've looked and don't see any that look that thick to knapp. Tripper
-
Tripper,
Usually the larger bottles like the 32 and 40-ounce size have larger, thicker bottoms. If you can find an old abandoned house site you can also find discarded cider and moonshine bottles with large, thick, flat bottoms. I would search some local recycling centers and search thru the bottle dumpsters. I've found some nice bottles there and made some cool points out of them. Just be careful cause there's usually a lot of broken shards and you can get bad cuts if ya aren't careful.

Like Billy said, it's the bottoms that you want to knap. Look for bottles with flatter bottoms. Bud and Bud Light are some of the flatter 12 oz. bottles. Just drop a few 16-penny nails in a bottle, point down, put your thumb over the top and shake it up and down. The bottom will usually pop off pretty clean.

Thats some dang good info who woulda thunk it.Ron

Milk bottles work too,and the round glass turntable thingy out of microwaves works good too.I also go to second hand stores to look for glass plates and pyrex items also.
-
I don't even want to know how you figured that out Steve. I've seen you drink. :o ;D
Dumpster behind your local glass company is a good place to get knapping materials.
-
That is pretty interesting Steve ;D. I've seen em filled with water to the rim then hit with the heel of the hand to pop the bottom off - I tried it but didn't work and kinda hurt.
tripper: If you can find any old junk pile or dump of some kind, there should be plenty of thick glass in there. Old TV picture tubes work great.

what is a 16 penny nail???? can anybody show me a pick of this 16 penny nail????
-
Shooter, it's just a common size of framing nail-about 3 1/2" long. It'll say 16d on the box. Other sizes will work as long as they're not too big or tiny.
-
Thanks for all the great info fellas.
I'm going to the glass company here in KC tomorrow.
I'm just starting and I tried several different beer bottles that were rounded and very thin.
Again, thank you, Tripper

Careful bout bustin them old bottles before you do a little research, some of them could put your kids thru college! ;)....Brian

The 40 oz coors works for me ;)

I'll join ya! We should make an event out of this the first one to drink the most and make the most points before falling into the debutage wins! ;D

DT sometimes you are wise beyond your years.Ron

Tripper, if the bottle bottoms are not flat, just be sure to push all your flakes off the concave side until you get both sides convex, and you can get pretty good points from rounded bottoms.
-
Speaking of bottles, I just found an old half gallon Clorox jug. YooHoo!
-
Man oh man! Women must think we are so simple. Give us an old Clorox bottle and we are tickled pink! (Sigh!) If it was just so simple the other way around! Imagine: "Hi Honey! You wont believe what I found!!! A box of diapers and some dish washing detergent!!!!"
I know all of you can imagine the response!!! ;) ;D ;D ;D

This point was made years ago by the late J. B. Sollberger of Dallas, Tx. That tiny speck in the upper nock is a white tail deer beded down in the hay field!! Watcher

Save a base for me! I like the look of those things!!!

Shannon, Nice. That glass makes a cool looking point.
-
Sweet Jimminy, those are cool. Do you pop the bottom off those things like you do a beer (Root Beer for me) bottle with really big nails? ;D

I haven't been knapping much lately. So I had a beer at dinner, popped the bottom off, and went out to my cave to knapp this point. It took me a longer than normal cause I'm a bit out of practice. However, I enjoyed the time by myself focusing on the task.

ok so i am very new to knapping, but i gotta ask.
arent those bottles old and worth a few bucks.
i know my step dad used to find old glass bottles when they tore up alleys,(he wroked for the city)and some of them old bottles were worth a few bucks.
i would think old clorox bottles might be worth a little,i aint exactly young, but i dont ever remember seeing clorox coming in glass, only plastic.
just curious.

Sailordad, I think they stopped putting Clorox in glass in the late 50's. As far as the value, they're worth more to me as a point than they are as a jug. That is unless it's full of white likker ;D
You can find them around here fairly easy. I live in dairy country and those old dairy farms used a lot of bleach. Back in the day, most farmers just dumped their trash in a pile out in the woods. If you know where to look you can find several of them. I bought these for $1 each at a yard sale.

How 'bout a moonshine jar/jug knapping contest? First person to finish off the jar & knap a point out of the bottom (without bleeding to death first) wins! :o
Jim
-
I might be up to that. I seem to knap my best when I'm feeling no pain! :o
-
Sounds like fun! I will make sure my jar has pure Spring Water in it! ;D
-
Here's one from a Budweiser bottle.
