Beer bottle knappin

I have a quick question?

What is the best brand of beer to buy for the bottles? I've looked and don't see any that look that thick to knapp. Tripper

Usually the larger bottles like the 32 and 40-ounce size have larger, thicker bottoms.  If you can find an old abandoned house site you can also find discarded cider and moonshine bottles with large, thick, flat bottoms.  I would search some local recycling centers and search thru the bottle dumpsters.  I've found some nice bottles there and made some cool points out of them.  Just be careful cause there's usually a lot of broken shards and you can get bad cuts if ya aren't careful.

Like Billy said, it's the bottoms that you want to knap. Look for bottles with flatter bottoms. Bud and Bud Light are some of the flatter 12 oz. bottles. Just drop a few 16-penny nails in a bottle, point down, put your thumb over the top and shake it up and down. The bottom will usually pop off pretty clean.

Milk bottles work too,and the round glass turntable thingy out of microwaves works good too.I also go to second hand stores to look for glass plates and pyrex items also.

I don't even want to know how you figured that out Steve. I've seen you drink.  
   Dumpster behind your local glass company is a good place to get knapping materials.

That is pretty interesting Steve . I've seen em filled with water to the rim then hit with the heel of the hand to pop the bottom off - I tried it but didn't work and kinda hurt.
 tripper: If you can find any old junk pile or dump of some kind, there should be plenty of thick glass in there. Old TV picture tubes work great.

what is a 16 penny nail?   can anybody show me a pick of this 16 penny nail?

Shooter, it's just a common size of framing nail-about 3 1/2" long. It'll say 16d on the box. Other sizes will work as long as they're not too big or tiny.

I'm just starting and I tried several different beer bottles that were rounded and very thin.
