Arrow Weight/2008

Hi All-

I am working on an arrow setup for bow season in a few weeks. I have a dozen cane arrows, which weigh in at around 450 grains each. They shot pretty well with 80-grain stone heads, with a slight wag indicating a tad of stiffness. However once I front loaded them with 142 grain fields, they flew totally clean and extremely silently. So I plan to knap accordingly.

My longbow is pulling effectively 45# at my draw. My total arrow weight is just under 600 grains. The arrows fly straight and sink deep into the target. Does a 45# and 600 grain setup sound a little sluggish? These arrows fly slow, but really thwunk the target.

All advice appreciated. By the way, I hold my hunting shots on deer to 15 yds and usually a lot less.

I would be comfortable with that setup using regular broadheads as long as your shot placement is good and you stay within 15 yards or under you should be fine. I would think the flint heads would perform as well, just haven't given them a try yet.

I think that should put the backstraps in the pan.

Better to have them fly silent than bang out the bow and give a jump to the prey??

I like the heavy, slower combination with deer.  The arrows seem quieter off the bow, but when they make contact with the ribcage, it sounds like you hit the deer with a sledge hammer.

Both of my hunting bows this year are in the 45# range and my came arrows are 550gr to over 600gr. I don't have proof yet  but they should work fine for deer. I shooting cane arrows with 2 feather fletching and stone and obsidian heads.     Pat

Sounds like a very effective set up. I prefer a heavy arrow with a sharp head,
