N.C. rock and points

Here are some NC point types I've made from local rock. Making points from local material that look like the artifacts I've found over the years has became my main interest in knapping. I've learned a lot this summer but still have a long way to go.

Those look great, Alan-the local types and local rock are my favorites, too. Is that the same quartz Yadkin you made at the Schiele?

Fantastic! Looks like Virginia stuff. I plan to upgrade to local materials and types sooner than later. Those heat-treated dovetails all over the web and knap-ins may be impressive, but you and James have found the heart of knapping. It's really applied anthropology. Kudos to those points!

Where can I get some of that waxy rhyolite?

What kind of percussor are you using? Antler flakers or copper?

Thanks Steve, yep that's the one I made at Schiele.

Thanks Pete, you're point looks great too! I call that waxy stuff rhyolite but I think James said it's actually silicified shale or something like that...anyawy it's from central NC. I've never found any of it myself. I've just picked up a few pieces mostly at Schiele when James was spalling a big boulder a couple years ago. Barry Mcall also gave me a few pieces of it. I really like the white quartz too but finding it without too many fractures is the problem. I'm using hamerstones and antler on these. I'm also starting to use dogwood billets and I'm going to try it for pressure flaking too. Have you found any knappable stone near you?

cool you are using local rock and point types. would like to get there eventually as well. I've been trying to get good nuf to knapp out something I can hunt with but I got a long way to go. every once in a great while I get lucky.

but those look very precise. Love the quartz ones. and that rhyolite is tuff stuff.

I believe the Clinch River Knap-In is Oct. 17-19. I went two years ago and it was a lot of fun.  I think some other PA members have also been.
