Show me your arrow tools!!!!

Well, I'm just about ready to start work on straightenning my arrow shoots. But, I need some help on making the tools to use in straightenning the shafts and so forth. Can you guys post pictures of the tools you use and construction info? Please help!!!! I am finding using my hands and my heatgun to be a lot of work! Could it be the technique I am using? Any and all info would be apreciated!!!

Never used anything except my hands and a heat source. Works for me. If there's a bend near the end of a shaft that I can't get hold of with my hands, I'll stick the tip between the spring and body of my leg vise or whatever's handy and pry it out.

I have got to make me a bench for a vise and put them together. Do you guys have the plans on how Pappy made his benches that he uses at his place? Those look like just what I need to really have something to work on! I am really getting tired of useing one of those bench mate watcha makolits that you set up and can store away. My back is killing me from bending over so low and it just does not hold the wood well. I know! I know! I'm bi@#$@N and moanen!

i use my hands too,and the grill or littler propane space heater.

but i been thinking, for the bends at the ends of the shafts, take a six inch long 1x2. drill a hole near one end about 5/8ths of inch wide at a 45 degree angle
heat the shaft,slip it in and gently bend.

gotta remember to be gentle,i just broke one that was almost perfectly straight

I will make one! I think I have just the wood to make it out of! Are there any other tools you all can suggest?

D.Tiller, I am so fortunate in that I have a large work shop, 28ft x 34 ft long. It has three rooms in it. Attached is a couple of photos of some of the benches in one of the rooms, actually my machining room. If you search Lowe's and Home Depot, sometimes you can find custom counter tops people have canceled or were ordered by mistake. You can get them for a fraction of the cost. The two shown here I paid a total of $54 for. The small tool you see in the other photo is my arrow straightening tool. I Carry this tool in my pocket 24-7. It is a deer tine with a brass hook in it. If you need to straighten an arrow in the field, or in your workshop, I usually rotate and sight down the shaft and then put the high side up. Hook the tool over the arrow and press down while sliding it over the high spot. Works great and only takes two or three swipes.

Dick, do you heat your shafts before using the antler tool?

Nice shop! Wish I had that much space. I do my work in a small shed not more than 10'x10'. Kinda cramped with all my stuff in there.

This is what I use along with some heat. Can't take credit for it. Saw it on a how-to on straightening Multiflora rose. Put a 2x2 on the bottom & chuck it up in a vice. Works better than any thing I've ever used.

Thats prety cool Butch! How long is it length and width wise? I will have to try that too. Man the possabilities are endless now.

Hey D.Tiller you do not have to heat the shafts. I lay one end on top of my shoulder and hold the other end with my left hand. Hook the tool over the shaft and pull down while sliding it back and forth over the high part of the bend. It really only works with wood shafts, not boo. I'll try and have Amy take a photo of me doing one. It is really quite simple but hard to explain.

Butch, that is a good tool. I will make one tomorrow. Thanks for posting it.

dbernier: awesome shop dude i am so envious, i have a Little one stall garage that houses all of my home maintenance stuff i.e. lawnmower etc,motorcycle,which leaves me about a 8 ft square area to make bows in in the summer,winter i move into the basement with about the same area to work in. feels like working in a jail cell ( never been in one, but i imagine thats how it would feel )
  thats a cool tool, pics of ya using it would be great, can always use a tool for in the field,

butch: thats a pretty cool tool also, dimensions would be appreciated. i'm getting tired of burnig the callouses off of my thumbs doing it by hand

I don't know how well it would work on shoot shafts, but here's a little tool I made for working on cedar shafts.
 It's a brass roller that I took off a Muzzy bowfishing rest and mounted on a little handle. 
 You simply roll the shaft on a flat counter top to find the high side. Then roll over it with a little pressure.  As you roll and press down on the crooked area, it compresses the wood and straightens them right out. It won't hurt the finish and will straighten little areas right out near the ends . Once you get them straight, they stay straight too.

I bet that would work for shoots if you heated them up before hand! Nice idea. I think I know where to find something like that!

Hey Saw Filer, now that is neat. Good workbench tool. With enough clearance you could use it in the field like I described, over the shoulder. This is good stuff.
