stone points on cain

  I have made and hafted a few stone points on cain, i have hafted them strait to the shaft and i have also used forshafts. how do you guys haft your points to cain?

Straight to the cane, I find foreshafts to be a pain in the butt and something else to impede penetration. A couple thousand years worth of Cherokee arrowmakers did just fine with cane arrows without foreshafts. If it's thick-walled cane with a small hole, I just cut them straight in. If it's got a bigger center hole, I'll sometimes plug it before cutting the slot.

IMO, foreshafts look cool.  I like 'em.  They also tend to make the arrow tip-heavy....a big plus for me because I like shooting wooden tipped arrows (i.e., sharpened foreshafts.)  Also, they are easier to repair/replace than the entire arrow.

Patrick, if you make your stone points as thick and clunky as I do, they give it plenty of weight-forward balance.  ;D  I have more trouble getting foreshafts lined up and spinning straight than I do making the rest of the shaft, and the connection always seems to be a weak point.

That's what I've done thus far. Drill out the end about two inches and insert a hardwood dowl of some sort with tight bond glue, then cut out for the point - glued them in then wrapped with sinew. Worked great!

Good looking arrows there Paul! I'm working on getting there myself. Shot some that Sawfiler had during the Classic and was really impressed with them.  What are yall using to straighten the cane? I've used a candle so far and just straightening by eye. Also have rolled them on a table some to see wobble. How about reducing the nodes down?

Greg, any heat source will work, but the bestest one is a heat gun in a holder. Keep rotating the shaft as you heat it, and don't overheat. When you see the cane start to sweat and start smelling it, it's ready to bend. I usually trim/sand the nodes down even with the rest of the shaft.
