Found some nice jasper on Anglesey (wales, U.K.) earlier in the year. I absolutely love thumb shooting and thumb rings are nice little things to make and own. If I was a money spending kinda guy I’d have a problem!
I’ve made a horn one and a couple of box wood ones. I started one the other day from jade and I dropped it on the concrete just after drilling it and it broke in ha which made me sad so I left this one fairly thick. Might slim it down some more yet.
I used a tile saw to cut the piece into a rough block so I could clamp it in the pillar drill vice. I then used a small diamond hole saw to cut out the most of the hole.
Then I used a brick disk on an angle grinder to give a very rough shape before using diamond bits in a dremel to shape the hole. Once the hole was shaped almost to fit my thumb I went back to the brick disk to bring the shape closer. Then I used various sanding and polishing things.
I’m waiting on stone polishing compound arriving and I can shine it up properly.
It’s not the brightest coloured jasper but it’s got all sorts of patterns in it. You can see the nice bright stuff in the photo is all fractured, I couldn’t find any of the bright pieces large enough to make a thumb ring from but maybe after the next storms there will be!
