how would you deal with this knot
« on: April 03, 2023, 05:22:40 am »
I am at floor tiller on this yew bow.  The top of this knot is less than 1 inch from the nock on the back of the bow, and is an inch long on that face.

It runs at a pretty steep angle and looks like this on the belly.

So. would you dig it out, leave it alone, wick in some cyano??  How would you deal with it?

Several possible solutions.
1. saw off that inch and shorten the bow, remove the problem, rather than fixing it!
2. Leave extra width around it as a feature bulge. Clean out any manky wood on the belly and fill with plug or epoxy/yew dust. There shouldn't be too much force on it that close to the nock.
3. Saw out a V removing the knot and glue in a matching piece of Yew. Like a V splice.
4. drill out the knot and fill, then flatten the back and add an overlay of clean sapwood, nicely feathered into the back, say 4" or so long.
I've done all of the above :)

Thanks Del, nice to have some reassurance sometimes.  I started picking out the manky stuff and found the knot was pretty sound for the most part so after cleaning out the little bit of gunk I packed it with yew sawdust and cyano
