First Bow - Hackberry Self Bow
« on: April 03, 2022, 09:06:37 am »
Hello Primitive Archers,

Last year I set a goal and the day after my archery deer season closed I started on my goal and pulled out the stave of Hackberry I aquired last summer.  I bought books (traditional bowyers bible 1-4), asked a TON of questions, and worked hard.  Some of you on here helped me a bunch and I am extremeley grateful.  Thank You.  It's time to start shooting.

Rennyseiwert,   That’s a very nice first bow!  Wow.  Very nice.  What wood is the lam in the handle?  Tiller looks good too.  My question is did you get lucky on your first one or did you break a few before finishing this one?  Either way that’s a nice bow.  Well done.  Welcome to pa!

You should be proud. That is an incredible first bow. Very well done. Anything you would do differently next time?

Great looking hackberry bow!  Congrats on your first and I’m betting many more in your future. Well done and I hope you have a lot of success with it this fall.  :-D

Superdav95, I got lucky and did not break any before this one.  I felt like I got close, there was a split at the outter limb and I had enough wiggleroom to file it back.  the wood in the handle section is walnut I had laying around. I realized I wasn't going to have much to work with for the handle so I added that chunk.

RyanY, yes, there are a few things I would do different.  my self nocks were way to shallow at first and that is how I think I ran into the wood splintering out a bit at the outter limb.  I also think my fades were too abrupt and I could've pulled it out a bit more.  I also intentionally left the wood its natural color and I might do a light stain on the next bow but I guess it depends on the type of wood I use.
