tanned a coon!

We finished tanning a coon the other day and it worked out great. salted, fleshed/membraned, washed, dried oiled overnight and stretched dry. It is super soft it looks awesome. There is one spot that had a tiny bit of grain splitting and I have no clue what caused it again. It was really well fleshed so I don't think it was caused by fat, but im not sure. Any ideas?

Cool.....As far as the bare spot goes the grain is awful thin in those flank areas.Over pressure from the fleshing knife on the beam can cause that too. Most times those areas are'nt even in a pattern from something you want to make from it.

Something like that can happen from the best of tanneries out there too.
