That is a skill I still have to master!  A friend once made flame in 21 seconds to win our club tie breaker at a skill day

In memory of my old buckskinning days every winter I start every first fire in the wood stove with my flint and steel.

Time to start practicing! (=).  Ed, that is a neat tradition.  I remember many Scout troops kept a piece of charred wood from the last campfire to use in starting the next campfire continue the spirit of the camp.

Nice ;)  I wish I could figure out flint and steel, I can get sparks and I have tried getting an ember with processed amado fungus, Chaga, and char cloth and never had any luck, I am using quirts instead of flint cause that's what I got around here.

I got a tradition similar bow Ed, I start every first fire in the woodstove with a bow drill, 2 years ago I started every fire of the season with bow drill so id be thoroughly comfortable with the skill

Fox, when using char cloth, do you fold it over so it is thicker? Do you have cloth on top of flint or on the bottom?

I haven't folder the char cloth over, and I have tried both ways on top and bottom, usually I try with the char cloth on top

Do you get sparks? Try to light a piece of your cloth with a liter to see if it  will get an ember.
