Time sensitive rock id....
« on: July 22, 2021, 11:00:02 pm »
So I'm in sw missouri currently picking up some "hedge" as most call it in these parts. And I ran across some rock that looks fairly hard and able to knap. Here's a pic. There is a whole lot of it in this one area. I am no where near an expert when it comes to knapping. Also alpt of it seams to have alot of cracks going through it but not all of it. Is it worth collecting a bunch to bring home with me?

Always bring home first then ask questions later!  ;D

Looks like Burlington chert. But you never know until you start knapping it. And maybe heating it too.
Any critter tastes good with enough butter on it.

Where's Rock? Public Waterways, Road Cuts, Landscape Supply, Knap-Ins.
How to Cook It?  200° for 24hrs then 275° to 500° for 4hrs (depending on type), Cool for 12hr

That looks like a lot of what I have around here, same purple-ish color and a lot of weather seams through them. I'd try to spall out what ya can there to sort through it. A lot of it looks good then you get into it and wish you'd left it there. The good parts do flake incredibly sharp.
