Something from glass butte

My cousin has been working just a few hours from the butte. He was looking forward to going to the gathering, but it was canceled because of COVID.

He decided to go look by himself one weekend. He brought back some pretty nice stuff and being the good cousin he is. He sent me a couple boxes.

This is the first piece I tried working on.

It’s not fancy colors, but nice material. I should have had a little more length but I had a overshot that took a little off on me

Everything had been percussion up till now. Then I switched to indirect percussion.

That’s all I got done for now. I wish I had a little more length. That overshot lost me about a inch. Then I had a vibration snap my tang off. Still pretty happy anyway. Did manage to thin it out nicely and have plenty of width left.

That is real pretty stuff!  Should be some nice points and maybe blades in those boxes!

Brian you did a great job thinning that piece. When I get some special stone I have a tendency to use the wet saw to slab. Since I don't have a volcano in my back yard. John

Thanks Stoner. I don’t have a volcano either. I’m so glad my cousin found one.lol.  He like making spalls. He does pretty good at it. He never quite figured out how to complete the process and thin them out and make a point. He sent me one box of spalls and another box with two larger pieces I’m hoping to borrow my buddies tile saw and cut a few slabs. It does save so much valuable material.

I did get a couple nice big flakes I think I can get some more points from while thinning this one

Here’s another spear point I made from one off the “flakes” from mass reducing the original.

Thanks Eddy. I have another flake from reducing the original I think I can get a nice point from. Not sure when I’ll get a chance to try it, but I will try to post it here when I do.

Wizardgoat gave me some Glass Butte obsidian to try but my hands wouldn't take it. An hour of knapping and two days of regretting it. Wish I'd tried this stuff earlier in my life. I think yours looks good.

PS I like the Bushes Beans insert Do you get a commission for that

Thanks DC. I always wear gloves now. It’s a little clumsy, but your right. This is really hard on your hands. Especially the arthritis in my thumb. The gloves do help.

Was wondering if anyone would notice the Bushes Beans. I’m hoping to be harvesting some Navy Beans that quite possibly will be going in one of those cans very soon. No Commision though.lol.
Funny side note. I showed my sugar beet seed dealer two magazine articles with full page pictures while I was wearing their sugar beet seed companies hat. I teased maybe I could get a sponsor.lol. Still waiting to hear from main office.

Thanks Steve. I like the shape of the stem to. I just made kind of a diamond shaped point. Then put kind of a diamond shaped stem on it.
