Deodorizing an old fur
« on: August 04, 2020, 09:16:53 am »
Morning, boys.  I have a really nice badger fur that was stored in a box for a long time.  It has that musty, sweet-sour smell of wool that was put away damp.  Any way to get that smell out without damaging the hide?

I'd try hanging it out in the fresh air for a while and probably use something like Fabreze or a homemade scent killer.

A light smoking probably wouldn’t hurt anything. It should knock out any smel that’s there. When brain tanning hides you smoke them for the water, bug, and mildew resistance but it also removes the smells so all you smell is smoke. Now that’s quite a bit heavier smoke, but I’d bet a light smoking would work fine.

You might also try dusting with baking soda let it sit for a while then shake the baking soda out.

Funny you say that; I smothered the flesh side in baking soda and left it out in the breeze for a couple hours, and just brought it in.  I'm not sure if it was the soda or the fresh air, but it seems to have done the trick.

I might sprinkle some borax into the fur side, too, to absorb any remaining odors and protect against bugs.

There is a product out there called Carbon Synergy, the ultimate scent control.  Google it.
