String follow?
« on: May 27, 2020, 07:33:34 am »
I have a yew ELB that was 75#@27”. It is backed with rawhide. I believe it was built in the early 80’s by a local man. Not my draw weight at this stage, or any other stage, of my life! It was tillered beautifully. So I used a cabinet scraper, being timid, to take wood off evenly. All the while rechecking tiller. I got it down to 54#@27”. After shooting it over the past week I noticed about 3/4” string follow. Within an 1/2 hour after shooting it goes back to it’s original form. Is this normal or acceptable in this design?

Yep. It's fine. Just enjoy it.
Straight wood may make a better bow, but crooked wood makes a better bowyer

Was the bow used much before?  That may have been its typical response to a stringing and shooting session before as well.

  Have you re-sealed it?

eta: fingers crossed this doesn't turn into 10 pages of  discussing the difference between set and string follow.

It’s past life is unknown. Yes I have sanded down to 500 grit and applied 6 coats of Truoil.
