Best epoxy resin for backing bows with fibreglass strips
« on: May 08, 2020, 01:24:30 am »
Hi guys, just wondering, have any of you had any experience with backing bows with epoxy resin ? I recently seen a video with a bowyer using walnut for the main bow body, then used a strip of fibreglass for backing and then applied the epoxy resin with black pigment. It had a great finish and looked really strong. W have any of you had any experience with this and if so what epoxy resin is suitable to use ?

We don't discuss FG backings here. There are plenty of other acceptable backings that work better.
A few years ago there were a number of commercial bowyers that tried this and quickly realized it wasn't a viable option.

Smooth On EA40 is the staple for most bowyers. Its a fantastic glue.

What Pearly said. I have a bow that James Parker did what you are talking about with a horn belly and that is the glue he uses.

Used EA40 for years. But if your doing any kind of Lams or stack glueing , Huntsmans is much better stuff.

If your using pretty wood lams, it dries clearer, goes father by rolling it out as its starts thinner and it permiates the wood lam better. Just a better all round Lam Epoxy.

If you have not use it I highly recommend it.

Remember, by glassing the back, you will likely overpower the belly.
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

That will depend on how thick the glass and the wood you are using.

very good point mullet.

just so I know for future reference.

Pat B says no FG talk, but mullet is ok with it.  Are modern materiel discussions ok for around the campfire?

Yes, everything here except religion and politics. After all, the magazine now has articles with glass bows and firearms.

There have been questions posted Around The Campfire about 'Glass bows before. But I don't think a lot of discussion on how to build them last very long. There are some very knowledgeable people when it comes to building them on Tradgang.
