How difficult is it to make a kiln from scratch using fire brick?

You posted on the flintknapper  thread so I am guessing you want to cook rock. The easy way would be to buy a turkey roaster at a yard sale and use it.

Look on craigslist for a roaster. I can't speak on a toaster oven.

No experience with either, but I would think you definitely want a variable temperature control up to about 500 degrees F.  You can also use an old charcoal grill with sand over and under the rock and a 20# bag of briquettes, that was posted a while back by some one who is smarter than me!

My preferred method of heating stone is in the ground .... when I have the time. But I have heated a lot of stone w/ a turkey roaster. If you take the pan out. Bed the bottom w/ a lil bit of sand or dirt it will just barely get to 500* . With the pan in only about 450*
It’s easier to control the heating times on larger stones to lessen the chance of crazing.   It’s even works on most low grade stones.

I've used a Black&Decker toaster oven for years, on the second one now. I bought both at Flea markets for $5 a piece. It gets up to 550 degrees and works for most of the rock I need to cook.
