Honey locust
« on: October 13, 2019, 08:10:55 pm »
I was at my friends property and spoted some hackberry. Very nice straight hackberry. I asked him if I could cut one and he said that he dosnt think he has any, but that he has alot of honey locust. I was kinda confused since i just saw  hackberry but i didnt want to push it so i said ok since he hates the stuff and hes a good friend. So either way id be helping him.

So what do you think about the stuff? Is it a good wood? Do i back with boo or hickory? Heat treat? Hope its actually black locust?

Honey locust is not like black locust. It will make a bow but is way down on the list.
Try educating your friend about the types of trees on his property. He may give you access to some if you let him know what he has and what is good bow wood.

My 1st try at a bow was Honey locust but it had been on the ground for a while. Disaster! (=)

yeah, we used to cut those down for him when we went camping on his property as a way to say thanks! I know there's a guy in the bow trade that worked with honey locust. maybe ill PM him. Also I was learning to drive a stick shift when i saw a lot of hackberry on another friends property. They have a HUGE workshop and when i started asking questions he said "You can come down here anytime to work!" i was so happy because he has all the tools i dream of having. Its not weird that i dream about tools..... or bows..... or flintknapping! )P( ;D
