When I heat straighten them I notice steam coming from the end as I work along their length.
I've noticed steam coming from garden stakes that are who knows how old. It surprised me.

I think it is moisture from the atmosphere just like with bow wood.

Better yet, grab the largest diameter ones you can find and toss them IN the fire!

I just spent two days throwing the tops  in the fire. Even an eighth inch cane makes a good snap. :D

If you do that with green cane most likely you will end up with length long splits between nodes....
Steam escaping.

Hehe... That's the fun in it. Get em too hot and that steam escapes so fast it's like a .22 going off  bigger the louder.

ahahahahahaha!   That is a great idea.  Would sipping Jameson's while watching enhance the experience?    How funny!

Err....yes
I wasn't meaning to use good arrow canes for this......I would've thought that was obvious.....not all cane grows perfectly!

Yes Todd that's the idea and Sleek I guess we have the same sense of humour :)

Sense of humor? Hell, it's my favorite thing to toss into the fire when nobody is looking!
