Flax backed yew shortbow "Wyvern"
« on: March 09, 2019, 02:20:53 pm »
Here is one of my creations - yew shortbow backed with flax fibers braided by myself. It was great challenge for me. Firstly - it was shortest bow I ever attempted to do and secondly - first yew stave in my hands. It was incredibly demanding piece of wood, very bumpy, with lots of knots and some twists. But I managed to finish it and I think I did it well.
I used Taxus Baccata stave. Bow is 43" ntn and draws about 48lbs at 19". I was really surprised about its performance. Shoots sweet. I applied experimental backing layer. Finished with linseed oil and cow horn (full nocks and arrow pass) . Bow appearance inspired me how to name it - "Wyverne". Watch out, it can really bite!

Nice bow! If it can bite, let it bite some deer!

Very nice backed yew bow.  :OK   I think you could have gotten a few more inches of draw if you had brought the bend back closer to the handle.

Very nice!  That is a good job.  I would also see how you did the braiding.  Neat!  Btw, where are you?

Ohma2, Delta_wolf, PatB, Hawkdancer - thanks for your kind words guys.
Building next bow using this backing I will document the whole process and I will gladly share it with all interested.
Speaking of the tiller I partly agree that it could bend a little more near handle section but wasn't sure about it- handle is a bit deflexed towards to both limbs and it's still bending there.
