Vertical spine

I was out tuning some arrows. They were too stiff so I was scraping the cock fletch side and 180° from that. It was cool to watch the flight get better and better. When I had finished I remeasured the spine and with the cock flight up it had dropped from about 50 to about 45. I measured at 90° to that and the spine had dropped a little, from 50 to 48-49. That got me wondering, how important is that vertical spine? The one that rides against your knuckle or for some people, the rest

Art Butner told me if possible put the stiff vertical side down on the shelf. So, both stiff sides go against the bow...if possible.
