Finished my first self bow! | Hackberry
« on: July 15, 2018, 02:56:54 pm »
I started back in late December of last year selecting/cutting the tree and finished about a month ago. I've put a few hundred arrows through it and it seems to be holding up well. Thanks to everyone that answered my questions, this was a very satisfying process.

American Flat Bow with oval shaped limbs - Hackberry(celtis occidentalis) from central Iowa.
69.5"n2n, 42#, 30" draw, 7.5" brace, limbs 2.5" at widest point. Center shot shelf, toasted belly, and reflexed tips. Finished with minwax espresso stain.

Nice work! Nothing feels better than the first time you successfully make a self bow of any real draw weight :OK

That's an excellent first bow!  It's way better than my first attempt.  Thanks for taking the time to post high quality pictures of it.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Congrats and nice work. My first bow was a few years ago and I haven’t been able to get back into it for a little while but seeing this is very inspiring

Thanks guys. This was my Iowa bow, kind of a heritage project. Next I would like to make a juniper bow from out here in Colorado, found nothing worthy yet...but I like the idea of using a different wood for different states.

Really is nothing quite like the thrill of shooting that first bow. Nicely done. Good Luck on the second one.
