Headed to the Dacite pits
« on: July 03, 2018, 01:05:46 pm »
After my last outing, I need a win. Think good thoughts!
I'll be there in less than 3 more hours.

I'll definitely be back. I spent far too long trying to liberate a massive chunk, but I couldn't break it off the formation. Then I dug up a few decent size chunks, then I collected up some quite respectable cobble. Then I vamoosed out of there to catch the store in Riley before they closed, filled my fuel tank. I got to the fire obsidian pit here at Glass Buttes a little bit ago, enough light left to dig up a few smallish pieces. I don't know if any of it is actually fire. More on the Glass Buttes finds tomorrow.
Now to set up camp in the dark.

Man, that tiny E-tool is a back breaker!  At least, get one with a real wooden handle! >:D (lol)!  You are becoming a real rock hound!  A surveyor stake might help break some of the stuff loose, along with a 2# hammer!

Oh I've got a 2-lb sledge hammer, full sized shovel, pry bar, and most importantly a big long heavy digging bar, just not in the pic.
I'm an old surveyor, though, and I don't recall using any survey stakes that would be much help here...please explain? Maybe you're talking about driving in a wooden stake instead of metal to avoid damaging the obsidian?

2 am, can't sleep; I'm waiting for daylight so I can get at that obsidian! I've been binge watching flintknapper Jimmy vids on youtube for last 2 hrs. I guess I should put down the phone and try to sleep.

He is real good with one of those big digging bars.
Good to keep a road kill badger or beaver on hand for his lunch.

I shot a rabbit for him, he did all the digging! You're right he's a real diggin' demon with that diggin' bar.

I got a respectable haul from my fave spot, 4 times now it's never let me down. I got a couple toads in there goin maybe 20lbs

I love that area around glass butte, I have only been there twice and it was 20+ years ago, but I solo camped and had a great time and dug a small amount of rock.

Now I just need time to knap. I'm still a novice, but getting there. Right now my hands are full.
