Osage-Hickory-Walnut Reflex Corrected
« on: December 31, 2017, 01:41:49 pm »
This bow was posted a few days ago with uneven tiller.  To correct it I removed wood between the upper fade and the hinge, removed wood from the entire bottom limb, and put a little more bend to both outer limbs.  By the time tilller was even the draw-weight went from 48 to 43 lbs. I then took an inch off of each tip, re-cut the nocks and narrowed the taper towards the nocks.  This increased the draw-weight back to the original 48 lbs.

very interesting backing strip, the pics make it more clear from your description in the earlier thread.
would you be willing to share more details about getting the strip from the log?

Nice retillering and photos. An unusual  bow bow design that looks good.

Tiller looks better. I really dig the look of that hickory backing.  ;)

The tiller does look better this time around. Nicely done! That hickory backing is pretty sweet, too. All-in-all, a pretty sweet bow.

Good tweaking work and a sweet full bend on a good looking bow.Nice work showing the benefits of starting out long enough and wide enough too.

Good job redhillwoods. I know it can be difficult to make corrections to a tiller when your already at your wanted draw weight but I think you made the right decisions. That tiller looks much better and your bow should last much longer and performance should be improved. I really like it now and once again welcome to PA. I'm expecting we'll see more nice bows from you in the future.

Sure, I'm happy to share the details.
I split a hickory log into staves and isolated a growth ring as for a self bow. Then I used a bandsaw to cut the back off the stave and worked the belly of the back down with a spokeshave. Then I ran a power hand planer over it to take out any unevenness left from spokeshaving and true it up for laminating to the osage belly. This stage is crucial as there is a ton of pressure  from the reflex and the 2 surfaces must mate perfectly.

Much better, looks great now! I have found straight grained boards on a few occasions where I was able to chase a ring and use it as a back. The confidence level goes way up.

I love the look of this bow, since most of my (few) bows have backs like this. Good job persisting through the issues and coming out with a bow to be proud of. I hope someday, when I grow up, I can make a bow like that.  ;)
