Jakob's bows - new pics added!

this was a project we already did in March, but I got the pics from Jakob just some days ago.

Jakob is a young friend who went to Canada to work there as a gun maker (custom made guns and gun stocks). He visited me in March and asked for helping him to make a bow – and of course I did. He is a master in his profession but a novice in bow making, but believe me he did a great job. This are his first two bows!

Well he had a very nice piece of osage and we decided to try a belly split, to get perhaps a second bow for his girl friend. The splitting went good, but the handles were not thick enough for a comfortable grip. As he wanted the bows for hunting in Canada we decided to go for a deflexed static. So the bows takes no stringfollow even a day long being braced. The two bows look nearly identical in side profile, but has different width.
We finished the bows in my shop, but went out of time with the handle overlay and arrowpass/shelf which Jakob did when coming to Canada.

the big one is 65+
the smaller is about 40#

Don't think Jacob is going to be a novice for long Simson. Way to pass it along. I find lots of people who think what I do is neat, but so far none of them want to try it. They do like to hear how it's done though so I at least try to tell them that.

Did you heat the deflex in just behind the fades or in the whole handle area?

Leon, the whole bending limb was on a caul to get deflexed with dry heat.

Thanks Simon! Have to try that on a self bow soon. (Started a yew bow already which is perfect for this)

Just got some more pics from Jakob. The handle overlays come obviously from leftovers from the gunstock (is that nice!).
