Ask.  I've just been granted permission to take about 20 yew logs from an old school here in England.  Pipe straight and perfectly clean, and all the school wants in return is a single bow to show students.

If they say no, you move on.

Make friends with the grounds keeper! I got in touch with the grounds keeper at the local university near me and now every time a typhoon rolls through, he calls me to help him cut fallen trees and take what I want.  I just got a huge chinese elm trunk. No idea if the wood inside will be straight grained, but there is definitely a dozen bows in there if it is. He's happy for the help, I'm happy for the wood.

Sometimes the temptation is pretty high, like the last time I was in Ottawa.  Even though I had a saw, the time and the means I controlled myself.  It was a lovely tree though

P.S.  I could rationalize it and say that this all Algonquin land and as such I am entitled to it  :)

sometimes it's got to be done. It's just as much your land as anyone else's Mark! Good control though. Cheers- Brendan

ok so i have a question for my Canadian buddies here. what are the actual laws reguarding taking trees on crown land? i know my papa needed to get a permit to cut pinebeetle kill for fire wood. i also know that if the longs are longer than like three or four feet they can nab you for 'logging' without a permit... could i get in SH#T for taking a seven foot log/ stave from crown?

I'm sure you could get in trouble for it. Depending on where exactly it was. I do it... I wouldn't want to get caught though. Just make sure to clean up after yourself. Cheers- Brendan
