Montana Whitetail
« on: October 07, 2016, 11:20:07 am »
I tore something in my foot elk hunting and just couldn't get around good enough to chase the ghosts of the woods up and down the  steep terrain they are occupying right now. I really should have been on crutches but I figure I can heal after the hunting is done. I have a few places that I filed away as likely deer spots on the fishing access sites I frequent along the Yellowstone River. I hobbled down to a place the deer get funneled through some willows and stood in a likely spot. Three minutes later a small doe was standing broadside at 21 yards. I don't remember shooting but I do remember hearing a thump, she took off, and I couldn't see my arrow anywhere on her. I waited a few minutes and went to look for my arrow and see if there was any blood. I found lots of blood but no arrow and waited 30 minutes. It was an easy track job and she didn't make it 100 yards. Turns out I got both lungs. My arrow was 5 feet from where she was laying with the shaft mostly broken at the fletching. I think the arrow passed through except the fletching and broke when she went down.
54 lb. osage self bow that has been my daily shooter for 4 years now, bamboo tomato stake arrow, goose fletching from a goose I killed last year, and a commercial two blade broad head. This is my first big game kill with a bow.

Tomato stake arrow?  So, am I to assume that is ketchup on the deer?  I, personally, don't eat ketchup on venison, but to each his own, I guess.

Well, done, sir!

Nicely done! Congrats on your first big game harvest, nothing quite like it.

I appreciate the comments.

One more weekend to kill an elk with my bow - hopefully I can get out. If I can't, I know where I will be sitting hoping another deer comes down the trail.

Taking whitetails in the Big Sky Country and doing it the hard way...Congrats!

Hate you are missing chasing those great elk on the mountain but you made the best of it.
