i broke the tip!
« on: August 09, 2016, 07:44:14 pm »
jokes aside i was working on my points again, and while this guy got amazingly thin, the edge was now even all around and when i went to finish off the tip i ended up snapping it off. i could probably fix this later but it wont be as big.

in the light this guy also had alot of fractures (which probably contributed to the snap) i think this is from one of those rocks that got frozen over winter.

One of the hazards of the game. It's easy to do. It helps to support tip with it kind of placed I front of your finger nail . Also try to run flake from tip to base and start running flakes at about 45 degrees toward base instead of straight across tip. Nice looking point I think you can still save it and it's good practice on your tips.

I consider myself lucky if all I break is the tip.  I have a bad habit of not paying attention to where I'm putting pressure and snapping them in half on the last pass with the pressure flaker.  Josh

If your like me and it looks like you might be to the stage where you start getting better and get fussier and you don't quit till you break something. Tip, Barb, base notching is where I break the most now of course I'm completely done with point other than notch.

Freeze cracks break early, that's gotta be your tip wasn't properly supported, you took too deep of bite, or hit a platform above center level. Looking much better man!

As said; support the tip with something behind the tip when pressure flaking. It can be a delicate area. I'll put the point on a piece of leather and use my finger behind the tip for the support.

Breaking them is part of making them, it gets less painful after a while... ???
There are no bad knappers, only bad flakes
