average flight for a standard selfbow?
« on: June 02, 2016, 11:02:31 pm »
I could probably post with more results in the normal bows section, but thought I would try here.  Someday it is inevitable that I will point a bow in the air and let one fly.  What could I expect from a normal well-built (for me, at least) run of the mill self bow @50-55#  in terms of distance?  I noticed those MoJam guys were getting 90+ yards from their mini bows.  How much space should I give myself before I let one go?

With a normal target arrow somewhere around 200 - 220yds. A skinny fastflight string will add a bit. Flight arrows could add a lot more :)
Did anyone make a mini hornbow? I got close to 200yds with the one that I made a few years ago. 35#@15

You would be doing quite well if you shoot more than 175 yards with a standard 10 GPP target arrow

With 10 grains per pound and a good release my best estimate would go like this. If you have 1" of string follow 160 t0 170 yards, A straight bow maybe 170 to 180, and then add about 7 yards for each 1" of additioanl reflex up to a bout 4". Not sure what happens past there but most bows tend to get soft from too much strain. I have seen plenty of straight bows hit the 200 mark shooting 10 grains and using a good release.
